Ever since Kody married his fourth wife, Robyn, in 2010, the polygamist’s connections with his first wives, Meri, Janelle, and Christine, have become malnourished. Throughout Sister Wives’ previous 15 seasons, viewers have observed the steady decay of Kody’s relationship with his first trio of spouses as he disproportionately poured all of his affection into his marriage with Robyn. Although there have been plenty of devastating bumps in the road like Meri falling for an online catfish, Kody’s plural marriage has never been in a worse condition than it currently is. This is primarily because the group of polygamists disagree about how to spend time together as a family in the midst of a global pandemic.
As if her relationship with Kody wasn’t uneasy enough before COVID, Christine appears to be at her wit’s end in response to her husband’s approach to the coronavirus. Kody decided that the families will stay quarantined from each other throughout the pandemic, which has only emphasized just how much of a rift there is between Christine and her husband. In a new preview for an upcoming Sister Wives episode, Kody gets emotional over the state of his marriage with Christine. While holding back tears, Kody explained, “The whole damn situation is breaking my heart… [COVID’s] really, really, really, hard on our family.” Although Kody appeared to be heartfelt in his confessional, the Brown family’s followers were skeptical of the patriarch’s real emotions. Instead of feeling for Kody’s difficult situation, one fan simply stated, “I hate him,” in response to the emotional episode preview.
Surprisingly, this Reddit user wasn’t alone in their criticism of Kody’s tears. Viewers agreed they didn’t have a reason to believe Kody was actually upset about the poor quality of his relationship with Christine. Another commenter wrote, “Yeah, I don’t believe his ‘tears’… they could have found a way to make it work if they truly wanted.” Viewers think if Kody really wanted to maintain his connections with all of his wives and children, he could be putting more effort into finding a solution instead of giving up. Other fans don’t believe Kody’s emotional confessional was authentic because the Sister Wives star only cares about himself. One Reddit user hypothesized, “Kody doesn’t care about anyone other than himself. Classic narcissist… no one else matters.” Because Kody has rarely prioritized Meri, Janelle, or Christine, viewers don’t think the polygamist is capable of feeling sympathy for his first three wives anymore.
