Sister Act 3 Coming To Disney+, Whoopi Goldberg Returning

A new entry in the Sister Act franchise is on its way, with confirmation arriving that Whoopi Goldberg will return for Disney+’s Sister Act 3. Both Sister Act movies are regarded by many as classics, despite the 1993 sequel failing to achieve the same degree of substantial success that the first film enjoyed.

Though the first Sister Act arrived in 1992, there has recently been an upsurge in buzz about a third film, thanks to a Goldberg interview in October where she mentioned the possibility of a sequel. The first film followed the musical exploits of Goldberg’s Deloris Wilson, a Reno lounge singer who is forced into a witness relocation program after she witnesses a mob hit. Wilson’s “safe house” happens to be a convent, where she will be disguised as Sister Mary Clarence. Eventually, Wilson adjusts to life in the convent, thanks mainly to her revamping the church’s ailing choir. The sequel film failed to make its money back, which seemed to mark the Sister Act franchise’s end.

Fortunately for fans of the films, the Disney Investor Day 2020 event has shared some very exciting news on the franchise. According to a Tweet from Disney’s official Twitter account, Sister Act 3 is not only in development, but Goldberg is also set to return and produce. The new film will have its premiere on Disney+, and in addition to Goldberg’s return, Tyler Perry will also be producing. At present, there is no confirmed release date or plot details, but the fact that Goldberg is once again donning the habit is more than enough for some fans to go on.

Goldberg’s earlier hints about getting a third Sister Act into production left much room for conjecture, and it did indeed seem as though the film was going to happen. Now that fans know that Sister Act 3 is on its way, it will be interesting to see who gets cast. The musical has been making a small yet noticeable comeback in film and television over the past few years. With the wide variety of acting and singing talent in Hollywood, this could be the best entry in the franchise yet. What’s more, Goldberg has been a respected star for decades, meaning that she’ll potentially be able to reel in some big-name draws in both the acting and musical fields.

But as the excitement over Sister Act 3 grows, hopefully, Goldberg will have learned enough from the failure of Sister Act 2 to avoid a repeat of that film’s flaws. Twenty-seven years is a long time to wait for a sequel, and the world has become a very different place than it was back in 1993. Hopefully, those changes will be reflected in the new film, because at this point, it seems like the world badly needs a dose of optimism and fun.
