Simu Liu Praises Moon Knight After Criticizing Ethan Hawke’s Mandarin

Simu Liu is praising Moon Knight after recently criticizing Ethan Hawke’s use of Mandarin in the show. Created by Jeremy Slater and based on the popular comics character of the same name, Moon Knight is the sixth television project produced by Marvel Studios to be released on Disney+, having premiered back on March 30. The series follows Marc Spector/Moon Knight, a mercenary with dissociative identity disorder, which has caused him to develop several identities, including Steven Grant, who finds himself drawn into a dangerous mystery involving Egyptian gods. Hawke stars as the villainous Arthur Harrow, a cult leader who has amassed a following of people who believe in his association with Ammit and judgment of others.

The second episode of Moon Knight, titled “Summon the Suit,” revealed just how expansive the Disciples of Ammit is when police officers delivered Steven Grant to Harrow and a community fully comprised of members. Grant first noticed what was occurring when pleading for help from a character named Jamila, who showed him her tattoo, that of a balance scale, the same as Harrow’s. In the scene that followed, while conversing with Grant, Harrow stopped to say something to Jamila in Mandarin, explaining that all of his followers have learned to speak different languages. Though the two only exchanged a few words, the poor attempts at Mandarin caught the attention of many, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star, Simu Liu, who jokingly tweeted that Harrow needed to fire his teacher.

Now, Simu Liu is taking to social media again to praise Moon Knight, despite previously criticizing its use of the language. In a new tweet, the actor calls the latest Marvel series “awesome,” much to the excitement of fans. Check out what Liu said about Moon Knight below:

Since Liu’s original comment regarding the accuracy of Harrow’s Mandarin, many fans have shared their own opinions on the matter, with some expressing similar sentiments and others theorizing if there was any intent. In any case, that episode further established the influence Harrow has over others and presented the type of world he wishes to create. It also explored his duplicity as a character, something that makes him stand out among most of the MCU’s villains. Harrow breaks his own rules by killing a man after promising to help him and summoning the powers of Ammit to take down Moon Knight, indicating that he possesses some of the same evil he desires to rid the world of.

Fans still seem to be enjoying Moon Knight as new episodes come out and Liu’s praise for the show indicates that his previous jab was not meant to be overly critical. As the series progresses, it will be interesting to see just how vast the Disciples of Ammit really is and if any other cultural representations within the community are handled differently. With only three more episodes of Moon Knight left, fans can look forward to seeing what becomes of Harrow and the cult in the end.
