PlayStation 5 owners might be able to play the famed Silent Hills demo, P.T., on the next-gen console thanks to backward compatibility, as long as the demo can be transferred over from a PlayStation 4. Sony has previously confirmed that the new system will support the vast majority of PlayStation titles, with select examples even seeing significant improvements thanks to the Game Boost feature.
P.T. is a playable teaser for a Silent Hills game that was canceled by Konami in 2015. This led to the demo being de-listed from the PlayStation Store, meaning it is no longer available to download even to those who have previously played the title on their account. Despite this, P.T. is widely regarded as a horror classic and is in high demand, especially with Hideo Kojima confirming that he has no plans to work on any future Silent Hill games.
Earlier this week, Sony revealed that it will be possible for users to transfer save data and game files from a PS4 to the PS5 via Wi-Fi transfer. This has led Eurogamer to optimistically speculate that players should be able to copy over P.T. from a PS4 and play it. After all, digital games can be transferred and the title was not included on a list of 10 PS4 games that won’t work on the next-gen console. All of this points to the fact that the PS5 should be able to run P.T. if fans still have a copy saved on current-gen systems.
The sheer popularity of P.T. has made also made it a popular game for fans to recreate on other platforms. This desire to remake the experience has only grown since it was delisted, with modders attempting to preserve the horror game for future players. While Konami has taken a tough stance against fan remakes, it hasn’t stopped versions cropping up in everything from Dreams to Half-Life: Alyx over the years.
If P.T. can be transferred to the PS5 and is playable on the next-gen console, it will come as a great relief to many fans of the game. The fact that it is no longer available to download has put consoles that have the teaser installed in high demand. Knowing that users can copy it over to the new system will add another backup and help preserve the game for more players in the future.
