Silent Hill 2 On The Way

Silent Hill 2 On The Way

The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that a sequel to the 2006 video game adaptation, Silent Hill is in the works. Writer Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida will be returning for Silent Hill 2, though no director has been named yet. Hadida’s Davis Films will start production on Silent Hill 2 once production is completed on Resident Evil 4, which is gearing up to start shooting as we speak.

Silent Hill is of course the story of a reclusive town where ash rains from the sky all day, and at the sound of an alarm Hell takes over the town and grotesque demons start appearing everywhere. The video game series (which was first released in 1999) has been so creepy/scary that I’ve had to turn on the lights for safety while playing it. The movie had some standout moments (a scene in a basement bathroom really did freak me out), but ultimately fell short as yet another half-realized video game adaptation, earning $47million domestically, despite a general panning by critics.

No word yet if Silent Hill 2 will be a direct sequel to the 2006 film or (like the games) a new chapter once again set in the town of Silent Hill; no word yet on whether Silent Hill director Christophe Gans will return to the helm, or whether star Radha Mitchell will be back to reprise her role (guess it depends on that direct sequel business).

SIDE NOTE: Hadida’s Davis Films has pretty busy slate: in addition to Resident Evil: Afterlife, the company is currently working hard at the Toronto International Film Festival to get the action/adventure Solomon Kane picked up; the studio has snagged Sony Pictures Classics to distribute Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, which features the final performance of Heath Ledger, this fall.

No word yet on when Silent Hill 2 is slated to hit theaters. We’ll keep you posted.
