Shrek 5 Wishlist: 10 Things We Want To See

With the news that Shrek 5 will be coming to fruition, there are a number of things that are high on the wishlist of what viewers want to see happen. The beloved Shrek franchise is best known for its irreverent humor and heartwarming characters and has captivated audiences of all ages for over two decades. A fifth film has been highly-anticipated and comes more than ten years after the release of the fourth.

Currently, there is not much known about what Shrek 5 will entail. All that is known is that the film will, indeed, be happening and that Michael Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy will be returning. The previous films have done a good job of adding to the franchise, rather than feeling like unnecessary sequels to drag out Shrek‘s success. This leaves high hopes for Shrek 5 and how it can further expand this incredibly popular franchise.

Fiona’s Ogre Transformation Backstory

Shrek 5 could reveal more about Fiona’s curse.

In the first Shrek movie, audiences learn that Fiona’s transformation into an ogre is triggered by the sun setting each night. Learning more about this curse and who cast it upon Fiona would make the franchise more robust and give viewers much-wanted answers about the origin story. Shrek 5 could take the opportunity to finally explain where this curse came from and how it ties into Fiona’s family history.

This would also be a chance to confirm or disprove a Shrek theory that says that the Fairy Godmother cursed Fiona. Not only would the explanation itself be intriguing, but the story that leads to the reveal could be as well. For example, Fiona could take a trip to visit her ogre relatives to learn about where the curse came from and reveal interesting information about Fiona’s lineage.

Shrek & Fiona’s Kids As Teenagers

Audiences could see Shrek and Fiona as parents to teenage triplets.

One of the most interesting parts of Shrek Forever After was getting to see Shrek and Fiona adjust to being new parents. Having triplets was not easy for either of the two, especially for Shrek, so it would be exciting to see how they are doing with parenthood now. The baby stage was hard for the new parents for a number of reasons, such as Shrek trying to navigate having increased responsibilities and feeling like he had less freedom.

Now that the triplets are older, it would be great to get to see how Shrek and Fiona are dealing with a whole new stage of parenthood. Having the triplets be teenagers who are rebelling against the rules and seeing how the parents navigate that would make for a unique storyline. Seeing Shrek having a hard time adjusting to the idea that his kids are growing up and won’t be at home for longer would also allow audiences to see a softer side of him.

8
Donkey’s Journey With Parenthood

Doney could learn to be more responsible after having children.

In the Shrek movies, Donkey has always been the goofy, dim-witted sidekick to Shrek. Now that Donkey has his own family and four kids to take care of, it is likely that he has had to mature. It would be great to get to see what ways Donkey has needed to change in order to take care of his family, as well as which parts of his personality he’s held on to.

Seeing him balance his silly personality and use it to bond with his children, while also evolving into a character that takes things more seriously would make for an engaging watch. For example, he could hold on to his love for waffles and be insistent on making sure the family has waffles for breakfast together. He could also utilize his undying optimism and unwavering loyalty to be a trusted confidant for his children.

7
Shrek & Fiona Teaching Their Children About Ogre History

Shrek would take pride in teaching his children about his history.

Viewers have gotten to see the mistreatment of ogres through Shrek’s experiences at the beginning of the series. Now that Shrek has his own children with Fiona, it is likely that he will share ogre history with them. Given how prideful he is of his swamp and of being an ogre, it would make sense for him to be excited about passing along that history to his own children.

Shrek 5 could see Shrek and Fiona taking their children on a road trip of sorts and teaching them about important historical events along the way. This would not only make for some interesting scenarios as Shrek tries to ensure that his kids are listening to what’s important to him, but it could also provide important information for viewers. Getting to learn more about ogres’ place in society would be valuable to fully understanding the Shrek lore.

6
Puss In Boots Reuniting With Shrek & Donkey

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish perfectly set up Shrek 5, so it would make perfect sense for the new movie to serve as a heartwarming and much-anticipated reunion for all of the characters. The last scene of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish showed Puss, Kitty Softpaws, and Perrito sailing the ocean toward Far Far Away. During this scene, the iconic Shrek theme song was playing.

Given this obvious homage to the Shrek franchise, it is likely that Puss could make an appearance in the upcoming movie. Because the Puss in Boots gang was heading to Far Far Away there is a clear opportunity for them to meet up with Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. Seeing them reunite after all this time and catch up with one another would make for a sweet and full-circle moment.

5
More Fairytale Characters Getting Introduced

Shrek 5 could explore more classic fairytale characters.

One of the most interesting parts of the Shrek franchise is getting to see classic fairytale characters reimagined. For example, the franchise has included the Fairy Godmother, the Gingerbread Man, the Three Little Pigs, Pinocchio, and the Big Bad Wolf. Shrek 5 should introduce even more well-known fairytale characters to allow for the universe to expand and give audiences a unique look at these well-known characters.

There are a number of great characters that Shrek 5 could introduce into the franchise. Previous Shrek movies have poked fun at Disney characters, like Ariel, and it would be humorous to see them continue to do so. Including Aladdin or Alice from Alice in Wonderland would be a great way to do this. Shrek 5 could also bring in more unique characters like the princess from The Princess and the Pea or Kai and Gerda from The Snow Queen.

4
Shrek & Donkey Swapping Fatherhood Advice

Shrek and Donkey can navigate fatherhood together.

Shrek and Donkey’s friendship has always been complicated, but fatherhood could be the thing the two need to bring them closer than ever. It is possible that fatherhood has softened Shrek and showed how much he values his friendship with Donkey. Because the two are both going to be navigating similar stages of parenthood, it would make sense that the two lean on one another to get through it.

Seeing Shrek and Donkey’s friendship evolving because of their shared best interest for their children would make for a heartwarming moment. Shrek and Donkey balance each other out well, with Shrek teaching Donkey to be a bit more serious and Donkey encouraging Shrek to lighten up. This balance will prove to be useful as they work with each other to become better fathers and seek each other’s advice on how to handle complicated parenting situations.

3
Fiona Taking The Lead On An Adventure

Shrek 5 could have Fiona front and center on a quest.

The Shrek franchise has given glimpses into how independent and strong Fiona is as a character, and it would be wonderful if Shrek 5 really leaned into this. It’s abundantly clear that Fiona is a capable warrior princess, which gives the movie great opportunity to let her take center stage. As Disney continues to produce movies that challenge the idea of what a typical “princess” is like, it would be the perfect time to continue to show how determined and capable Fiona is.

Not only would seeing Fiona go on a big adventure of her own be interesting in itself, it would also present the opportunity for Shrek to take on more of a sidekick role. He has always been front and center in the movies, and this could show him in a completely different kind of situation. He could serve as the supportive husband who encourages his wife’s dreams and aspirations.

2
More Celebrity Appearences

The newest Shrek movie should welcome more big-name celebrities.

Shrek has had many big-name celebrities make appearances throughout the franchise. Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler, Justin Timberlake, Jon Hamm, and John Krasinski are just a handful of the celebrities who have lent their voices to the movies. Having these well-known stars join in on the film makes things even more exciting for viewers, who get to listen for familiar voices and identify them.

These celebrity appearances have become a defining part of the Shrek franchise, and the newest movie should really lean it to that. Finding a way to include social media stars and influencers would be a cool way to modernize the film, while still keeping up the celebrity trend. Additionally, having the actors play themselves in Shrek 5 would be a fun treat. Simon Cowell playing himself in Shrek 2 was one of the most iconic moments of the franchise and doing something similar in the new movie would be fun.

1
Far Far Away Becomes More Modern

Modern technology can be introduced to the kingdom.

It would be very intriguing to see how Far Far Away adjusts to modern technology such as social media, smartphones, and video games. Shrek learning to accept the benefits of technology would make for a funny storyline and would allow for the franchise to change along with the times. He could learn how to utilize technology from his young children and slowly learn to see the value in it.

Additionally, Donkey could fully accept the new technology introduced to Far Far Away. He could begin a career as an influencer and make comedic videos. While having social media and the rise of technology be the primary storyline would not be the best idea, it would be great to see it weaved into Shrek 5.
