Showtime Sets ‘Homeland’ and ‘Dexter’ Return Dates

The upcoming Dexter season 7 and the highly-anticipated second season of Homeland finally have dates for fans to mark on their calendars. Come September 30th, Showtime’s resident serial killing anti-hero will usher in a new season of punishing criminals, talking to dead people, and possibly exploring a divisive romance with his adoptive sister, Deb.

Meanwhile, Homeland, the Howard Gordon-produced series that brought two Golden Globes to the network (Best Drama and Best Actress for star Claire Danes) will begin its second season with high hopes of garnering more praise – and perhaps additional awards – for the network to brag about.

Given that the combination of Dexter and Homeland worked wonders for Showtime’s ratings, it comes as no surprise that the series would be paired with one another once more. What does come as a surprise, though, is that both were announced prior to any specific news about return of programs such as the Matt LeBlanc-led Episodes or the long-running Weeds.

Showtime has done well with its original programs as of late, with Shameless, Californication and the freshman comedy House of Lies, starring Don Cheadle, all being renewed early into their current seasons. The network has also announced a bevy of new dramas to its schedule, such as Ray Donovan (starring Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight) and Masters of Sex, which will be headlined by Michael Sheen (Underworld, Midnight in Paris) and Lizzy Caplan (True Blood, Cloverfield).

Still, whatever interest there may be in these new series, it will likely be eclipsed by the potential storylines for Dexter and Homeland.

As reported by Screen Rant earlier, Dexter season 7 will be exploring the apparent discovery of Dexter’s dark passenger by his sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), who may or may not be in love with the man she has called brother for much of her life.

There is also the question as to whether or not Dexter will end with season 8, or continue on as suggested by Showtime president David Nevins. Should the seventh go-round prove to be the penultimate season to the series, fans may see September 30th as the beginning of the end for the blood loving forensic pathologist.

Meanwhile, Homeland will jump forward in time to see its characters shuffled around quite a bit from season 1. As last season ended with Carrie (Claire Danes) voluntarily being subjected to electroshock therapy to combat her bi-polar disorder, and Sergeant Brody (Damian Lewis) revealing his intention of running for public office while still maintaining his cover as an Al-Qaeda sleeper agent, the jump in time could prove an effective way to further ratchet tension in the series rather than destroy it as many fans may fear.

Though its still many months away, there is good reason to clear your schedule for September 30th – or at least clear up space on your DVR.

Screen Rant will update with more information on Dexter season 7 and Homeland season 2 as information becomes available.
