Shondaland Characters: 5 Friendships That Would Work (& 5 That Would Turn Ugly)

Shondaland Characters: 5 Friendships That Would Work (& 5 That Would Turn Ugly)

Shonda Rhimes has achieved remarkable success when it comes to television programming. For starters, we’re talking about the woman who created Grey’s Anatomy, one of the longest-running shows today. As a result of her success, Rhimes expanded her reach as Shondaland released more hit shows.

And because of the vastness of Rhimes’ universe, fans have long been mulling about the idea of bringing some characters from different shows together. Many think some of them would go on to become good friends. However, there is also think some friendships won’t work in the long run.

Would Work: Fitz Grant And Derek Shepherd

Most fans will agree that Scandal’s Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) and Grey’s Anatomy’s Derek (Patrick Dempsey) would make a great friendship. Both Tony and Derek are highly accomplished in their own fields and understand the pressures that come with the job. They also know that their positions hold great power and responsibility, meaning they often prioritize their colleagues’ needs to help them. Let’s not forget that Derek ended up working for the President for a brief time in seasons 10 and 11. This was a crossover waiting to happen.

Turn Ugly: Alex Karev And Connor Walsh

What Grey’s Alex (Justin Chambers) and How to Get Away with Murder’s Connor (Jack Falahee) have most in common is that they are both arrogant men. They’re also both highly competitive and that’s been useful for both of them to get ahead. They also have a tendency to get into trouble.

Fans can easily envision these two hanging out and having a beer together at least once. That’s said, the worst things that Alex has ever done pale in comparison to the things Connor has done in the series, especially disposing of Sam Keating’s (Tom Verica) body. Just learning about what Connor has done would probably horrify Alex. Not only that, their egos may eventually clash.

Would Work: Mellie Grant And Naomi Bennett

No one is sure how these two women would meet, since Scandal’s Mellie is usually in Washington D.C. and Private Practice’s Naomi (Audra McDonald) is typically in New York, although she also travels internationally a lot.

However, if fate could just intervene, fans bet these women would share a beautiful friendship. After all, these are two accomplished women who also happen to be loving parents. At the same time, they both know what it’s like for their marriage to crumble and find love again eventually.

Turn Ugly: Bonnie Winterbottom And Abby Whelan

The crossover episodes between Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder have come and gone. Unfortunately, it doesn’t exactly delve into the possibility of several characters from both series becoming good friends (and quite understandably so).

That said, fans might think that Bonnie (Liza Weil) and Abby (Darby Stanchfield) would have become acquaintances since they are both in politics. What’s more, they also have a lot to discuss since they had both served as number twos. However, these women may eventually end up in conflict with each other because of their jobs too. Hence, there’s just no way that they can keep hanging out.

Would Work: Addison Montgomery And Olivia Pope

Fans might think that Scandal’s lead character, Olivia (Kerry Washington), and Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice’s Addison (Kate Walsh) would get along just fine. After all, both women are highly accomplished and headstrong.

Moreover, just like Olivia, Addison also has a tendency to do something wrong (illegal even) if she thinks it would help make something right.

Turn Ugly: Callie Torres And Abby Whelan

On the surface, it may seem that Grey’s Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Abby can become friends. They might not have much in common, but there are still things that the two can talk about (their relationships can be a good starting point). Both women have also lost someone they love, and they say misery loves company.

That said, Callie would probably not like Abby too much in the long run when she hears of all the shady things she has done over the years. Fans also don’t think these two would stay in touch in the long run because they lead such different lives and function in completely social circles. Not to mention, they don’t live in the same state either.

Would Work: Annalise Keating And Olivia Pope

One of the best things about having a crossover between How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal is that viewers got to see these two powerful women get together and work on a class-action lawsuit. There may have been some friction, but their partnership worked, and fans would really love to have seen that happen more.

Sure, these women may argue from time to time. But that’s okay because they can be really honest with each other. Chances are Annalise also understands that Olivia has to get her hands dirty from time to time.

Turn Ugly: Laurel Castillo And Meredith Grey

On the surface, it seems that both women could find enough common ground to become friends. After all, both women have had to deal with major parent issues (although neither of Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) parents have been involved in shady deals or committed murder).

However, this friendship probably wouldn’t last very long, especially if Meredith found out what type of person is and how dangerous she could be. Since Meredith has sworn an oath to protect others, it’s highly unlikely that she would condone Laurel’s past.

Would Work: Meredith Grey And Mina Minard

Since Off the Map’s Mina (Mamie Gummer) and Meredith are both in the medical profession, fans think it’s likely for these two women to cross paths at some point. They could have met at a medical conference and become friends, helping each other with their cases. Even if Mina didn’t live in Seattle, they could have still kept in contact through long-distance. Since Off the Map was canceled too soon though, we really don’t know what’s happened to Mina now. Maybe she’s also gone up the ranks, like Meredith?

Turn Ugly: Olivia Pope And Miranda Bailey

Behind the scenes, fans are pretty sure there is a lot of love between Washington and Chandra Wilson. However, if a crossover between Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy had happened, viewers are not quite sure how well Olivia and Miranda would get along. Sure, they might share a laugh or two.

They may even hang out together at Joe’s. But ultimately, fans think Miranda would be uncomfortable, with some of the shadiest acts that Olivia has committed in her life. Hence, both women may just steer clear of each other and let their friendship fade.
