Shining Sequel Doctor Sleep Casts Jacob Tremblay

Wonder star Jacob Tremblay has joined Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson in the cast of Shining sequel Doctor Sleep. Stephen King’s follow up to his classic novel The Shining was published in 2013 and went on to become a bestseller. Gerald’s Game director Mike Flanagan is handling the film adaptation, and also wrote the script.

Set three decades after The Shining, Doctor Sleep follows an adult Danny Torrance (McGregor) as he struggles to deal with the trauma remaining from the harrowing events that took place in the Overlook Hotel. Now an alcoholic, “Dan” as he calls himself tries to get his life together by going to work at a hospice, where he uses his “shine” abilities to comfort patients as they die. Enter Abra (Kyliegh Curran), a young girl who manifests the same psychic abilities as Torrance. Dan forges a connection with Abra thanks to their shared abilities, and through her learns about a secret society of semi-immortals called the True Knot, who feed off those who possess the “shine.”

As reported by TMZ, Room and Wonder star Jacob Tremblay has signed on to join the cast of Doctor Sleep, further beefing up the film’s already impressive roster of actorsTremblay reportedly scored a $100,000 payday for signing on to the film, just more proof of his growing clout as one of the biggest child stars in Hollywood. But kid fans of Tremblay won’t get to see him in Doctor Sleep unless they have really permissive parents, as director Mike Flanagan says he’s aiming for an R-rating.

Details on Tremblay’s role are being kept under wraps, but according to the website The Blast, the actor is only signed on for two days of work (making his $100,000 payday more impressive). With such a small time on the set, it’s obvious that Tremblay’s role cannot be a big one. It’s very possible he could be coming in to shoot flashback scenes as a younger Danny Torrance, as indeed the film has already cast Alex Essoe to play a young version of Danny’s mom Wendy (the character originated by Shelley Duvall in The Shining). Carl Lumbly has also been cast to play Dick Halloran, the character first played in The Shining by Scatman Crothers.

Whatever the nature of Tremblay’s role in Doctor Sleep, the part represents another solid building block in the young actor’s already impressive career. In addition to that role, Tremblay is also set to star in the R-rated comedy Good Boys. He’s also set to join Christopher Lloyd, Kenan Thompson and Mel Brooks in an untitled project from animation house Lani Pixels.
