She’s Gotta Have It Season 2 Video & Poster Confirm May Premiere Date

She’s Gotta Have It’s season 2 video and poster have confirmed a May premiere date. After getting its start all the way back in 1986 as director Spike Lee’s first feature-length film, She’s Gotta Have It has had a lengthy road to mainstream recognition. Originally shot for just under $200,000, the Brooklyn-based dramedy has since gone on to gross over $7 million in the US.

The film played a major role in establishing Lee as the highly regarded, Oscar-winning filmmaker that he is today and is viewed by many as a key component in the ongoing transformation of black American representation in cinema. Launched in 2017, the She’s Gotta Have It TV series brought back the film’s main characters and follows Nola, a Brooklyn-based struggling artist who maintains her independence and freedom in relationships (and her work) while forging love affairs with three different men – Greer, Jamie, and Mars. The first season was met with positive reviews and marked one of the few times that Lee has worked in television, directing all 10 episodes for Netflix.

With the first season having elicited such an encouraging response, Netflix has been keen on getting a second season secured. News of the second season of She’s Gotta Have It has arrived via a date announcement on Netflix’s YouTube channel, as well as a new promotional poster. The official release date for season 2’s nine episodes is May 24, 2019 on Netflix. Check out the announcement video and poster below:

Although Lee directed every episode of She’s Gotta Have It’s first season, Netflix has not confirmed his involvement as director for season 2. Lee will, however, remain attached to the series as a producer. After finding substantial success with last year’s Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman, it’s understandable that Lee has other projects that require his attention, particularly his newly announced adaptation of the 1988 film The Wrong Guys, which he’s retitled Da 5 Bloods and set in Vietnam. The film is rumored to be entering into production soon, making it the first feature length Spike Lee Joint for Netflix.

It’s perhaps arguable that Spike Lee’s recent best-adapted screenplay Oscar for BlacKkKlansman has rekindled mainstream interest in what he has to offer. Netflix seems to be wisely investing resources that will continue to help build that interest, further underscoring Alfonso Cuarón’s recent point on the value of cinema allowing for a diverse range of distribution models. With new generations now being exposed to Spike Lee’s work, a series such as She’s Gotta Have It could very well end up redefining minority representation once again – this time in television.
