Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Hints At His Casting In Avengers: Kang Dynasty

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu hints at his casting in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Marvel Studios confirmed plans for two more Avengers movies at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, which is where Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars were announced. The movies are slated to hit theaters in May 2025 and May 2026, but only Avengers 5 has a director onboard with Destin Daniel Cretton. His work on Shang-Chi and the upcoming sequel’s development has convinced audiences that Simu Liu’s superhero will return as part of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty‘s cast.

Marvel Studios has not made any cast announcements for Avengers 5, leaving audiences to speculate about which MCU characters will be involved. During a recent interview with Comicbook, Simu Liu was asked about Destin Daniel Cretton directing the movie. He shared his excitement to see what his Shang-Chi director does with a “grander scale of The Avengers,” but Liu also seemingly hinted that he is part of the cast for Avengers 5. The actor wrapped up his praise for Cretton directing the movie by saying, “I’m so excited to get to work for him again.” The outlet then asked if that confirms he’ll return as Shang-Chi in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, leading to this response:

I would think so… I would hope so. Don’t take my word for it.

How Shang Chi Will Fit With The Avengers

Shang-Chi joining the Avengers in the next movie became inevitable after Shang-Chi‘s mid-credits scene. It was during the tag that Shang-Chi met with Wong (Benedict Wong), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who welcomed him to the crazy superhero world. The scene made it quite clear that Marvel wanted to make Shang-Chi an Avenger in the near future. Having Simu Liu return in Avengers 5 can solidify that status. That expectation has only grown given Destin Daniel Cretton’s involvement.

Since Shang-Chi already has some familiarity with a few Avengers, he should fit in quite well with the team. His addition will continue the MCU’s trend of assembling an even more powerful Avengers team than what came before. Shang-Chi is already one of the most powerful MCU heroes thanks to his control of the Ten Rings. Phase 4 has also made Thor way more powerful and introduced several other heroes who can increase the team’s strength.

There is a chance that Shang-Chi’s role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will be quite important. Theories suggest Shang-Chi’s Ten Rings are tied to Kang, which would mean he must play a key role in what happens. The MCU could reveal the Rings have multiverse properties and that Kang is on the receiving end of the beacon teased in Shang-Chi‘s post-credits. In any case, it would be pretty shocking if Simu Liu’s casting in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty did not happen.
