Sex Education: 10 Questions Season 3 Needs To Answer

Sex Education: 10 Questions Season 3 Needs To Answer

Content Warning: This list includes mentions of sexual assault.

It has been nearly two years since the last episode aired but fans are finally about to get season 3 of Sex Education. The Netflix comedy left off with almost every character facing a new, interesting situation. That includes potential romances, pregnancies, exploring their sexuality, overcoming assault, and more.

Since season 2 dropped in January 2020, audiences have had plenty of questions about where the show goes next. With these characters all focusing on something new, it could mark a totally different show once it returns, which could be for better or worse. Hopefully, by the time everyone binges through season 3, they’ll have all the answers they desire.

Does Rahim Continue To Play A Prominent Role?

Sex Education: 10 Questions Season 3 Needs To Answer

At the end of season 1, Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa) was loud, out, and proud after the school dance. In season 2, he was blown away when he first saw new student Rahim (Sami Outalbali), who he basically called the most attractive person he’d ever seen. The two began dating in one of the show’s sweetest romances.

Eventually though, Eric ultimately chose Adam over Rahim in the season 2 finale. Rahim was a welcome addition to the show, so it would be a shame if he was relegated to just being a fling for Eric and someone to throw a wrench into the Eric/Adam ship. Many fans hope he finds a way to stay relevant in season 3.

Will Maeve’s Family Return?

A major storyline of season 2 saw Maeve Wiley’s (Emma Mackey) mother Erin (Anne-Marie Duff) come back around. The two seemed to be patching things up as Erin attempted to get her life together, or so Maeve thought. She ultimately discovered that Erin was lying about going to work and that she was still using drugs.

In a heartbreaking scene, Maeve called social services to report Erin, resulting in a split with her daughter and Meave’s half-sister. Although she has proven that she can take care of herself, the show has now had Maeve’s brother Sean and mother show up for short stints and it’s a wonder if they’ll do so again.

Is The Clinic Still Running?

The entire show is seemingly based around Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) and the brilliant Maeve running their sex therapy clinic. Issues with their friendship have caused them to stop it for a short time in the past but the biggest wrench in their plans came when Jean (Gillian Anderson) started working at the school.

With a legitimate professional around and available for free, most students opted for Jean over Otis. Things got especially twisted when Jean found out about the clinic. There’s no word on whether Otis and Maeve will be back in business in season 3, especially with a new headteacher around.

Do Jackson & Viv Become More Than Friends?

Jackson and Viv in Sex Education

The journey of Jackson Marchetti (Kedar-Williams Stirling) is one of the most interesting in the series. He started as the popular head boy, swimming champion, and seemingly perfect person. Layers were eventually peeled back as audiences saw Jackson struggle with the immense pressure put on him.

He went as far as to injure himself and try his hand at something new to avoid swimming. A major part of his turnaround was the bond he formed with Viv Odusanya (Chinenye Ezeudu). She started by tutoring him but they became close friends and she was there for him during a panic attack. There were hints of romance but audiences would be happy if they simply remained friends too.

What Becomes Of Ola & Lily?

Lily Iglehart (Tayna Reynolds) is one of those characters who grew from random side comedic relief into someone more prominent. Her friendship with Ola Nyman (Patricia Allison) in season 2 gave her more screen time and it developed into an unexpected but welcome romance.

Ola was first to make a move, which scared off Lily a bit but by the time season 2 wrapped up, the adorable couple was officially dating. It’ll be interesting to see how their lives change with this romance as Lily has never been with a girl before and Ola recently came to the conclusion that she’s pansexual.

Where Does Aimee Go Next?

The first main character seen on the show isn’t Otis, Maeve, or Eric. It’s actually Aimee Gibbs (Aimee Lou Woods). From the start, she’s clearly interested in sex, doing it at first to please her lover and then eventually to please herself, with both playing a big part in almost every storyline she has.

Season 2 saw her get sexually assaulted on a bus, which changed everything. She acted fine but was then afraid to ride the bus and flipped out when Steve touched her. Arguably the best episode of Sex Education focused on her overcoming that a bit and getting on the bus with the fellow girls in detention. However, that doesn’t answer whether she’s fully ready to move on.

How Serious Are Otis & Ruby?

Ruby and Otis walking together

One of the biggest shockers of season 2 was the reveal that Otis lost his virginity during a party and did so to Ruby Matthews (Mimi Keene), a member of “The Untouchables” and one of the meanest girls in school. As they went to get a morning-after pill, the two shared some deep conversation and bonded a bit.

While it was nice to see Ruby open up and be vulnerable, many fans assumed that would be it for them. However, the latest trailer for season 3 seemed to hint at more, including Otis and Ruby holding hands, hanging out with the other “Untouchables” and riding a bike together. Fans assume Otis and Maeve are endgame but what if it ends up being Otis and Ruby?

Will Eric Regret Choosing Adam?

Adam and Eric in Sex Education

Eric spent most of season 1 being tortured by Adam Groff (Connor Swindells), a bully who mostly did terrible things because his father was a bully of his own. In the finale, the two had a fight that turned into sex but Adam still struggled to be open about his sexuality in season 2.

He had romantic moments with Eric but did so in private where nobody could see. Meanwhile, Eric was dating Rahim, who kissed him in public and seemed to adore being around him. Though the Rahim relationship was clearly healthy and the Adam one was toxic, Eric chose Adam, which he might regret this season.

How Does Everyone React To Jean’s Pregnancy?

Jean cries on her doctor's shoulder

Another big shocker in season 2 was the reveal that Jean was pregnant. The baby is clearly Jakob’s (Mikael Persbrandt), which will mark a huge change since the two broke up just before she found out about the baby. Whether she keeps it or not, whoever finds out about the pregnancy will have an intriguing reaction.

Jakob is one thing but it’s interesting to consider the way Otis will handle this. His relationship with his mother has always been rocky and the idea of a sibling nearly two decades younger than him could be a problem. Eric might be excited though that’s his usual reaction to anything. On a side note, fans are still hoping to see Jean and Maeve interact one day.

Do Otis & Maeve Get Together?

Otis and Maeve look at each other

The driving force of the series is the “will they/won’t they” between Otis and Maeve. From totally different worlds, the two always find their way back to each other despite plenty of roadblocks and mistakes. Season 1 ended with Maeve going to tell Otis how she felt, only to find him kissing Ola.

Season 2 had Otis leave Maeve a voicemail explaining his love, only for Isaac (George Robinson) to delete it before Maeve could hear it. One has to assume that the two finally make it official this season, especially with a trailer shot of them face to face in the rain. Alas, only time will tell.
