The Pixar art takes a more sympathetic and tragic approach to Snape’s origins in Harry Potter. In the art, Snape proposes to Lily before she rejects him and moves on with James. This is an exaggeration of the story, as their relationship never actually progressed past friendship and didn’t involve a proposal.

In the Harry Potter films and books, it is revealed that Snape and Lily were friends while attending Hogwarts as students. Snape was very much in love with Lily, but she didn’t share his romantic feelings. She viewed him solely as a friend, but things grew increasingly bitter between them due to Lily’s relationship with James. Their friendship eventually ended due to James bullying Snape. However, Snape never let go of his feelings for Lily or his grudge against James. This is why, though he mourned her death for his whole life, he also treated her son terribly.
