Servant: What Roscoe Saw During Hypnosis (& What It Means) Explained

WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Servant season 2, episode 2, “Spaceman”

Roscoe (Philip James Brannon) has officially returned in Servant season 2, episode 2, “Spaceman,” but not without seeing some horrific actions done by the cult who’ve taken Jericho. After disappearing in season 1’s finale, “Balloon,” what happened to the private investigator remained a mystery. Now that he’s back, Roscoe has shed some light on the terror that the cult can cause – here’s what this means for the future of Servant.

M. Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ series Servant premiered in 2019 to overwhelmingly positive reviews. The show has been such a resounding success that it was officially renewed for season 3 only a few days prior to the release of season 2’s “Doll.” Servant stars Lauren Ambrose (Wanderlust) as Dorothy Turner, a grieving mother who found solace in a reborn doll following the tragic death of her infant son Jericho. When she and her husband Sean (Toby Kebbell, Black Mirror) hire Leanne Grayson (Nell Tiger Free, Game Of Thrones) as their live in nanny, the reborn doll comes to life. Jericho’s father and uncle Julian (Rupert Grint, the Harry Potter series) grow suspicious of the young woman and hire Roscoe to uncover whatever secrets she may hold. What he doesn’t expect is setting his eyes on the true horrors of her cult.

While it was assumed that Leanne was a witch, given her hay crosses and capabilities of placing curses on the Turners, it turns out that she is part of a biblical and possibly Satanic cult. Roscoe’s return added an extra layer of their evil that could prove integral to how the series, especially Servant season 2, unfolds. Here’s everything Roscoe saw and what it all means.

Servant: What Roscoe Saw During Hypnosis (& What It Means) Explained

Roscoe doesn’t realize he’s been gone for nearly a week when he returns. He’s lost a significant amount of his memory over the five days that separate season 1, episode 10, “Balloon” and season 2, episode 2, “Spaceman.” As such, Natalie (Jerrika Hinton, The Roommate), a kinesiologist, comes to the Turner home to hypnotize him. He reveals that he saw the cult praying to “him” while passing a crying baby from person to person. They bound Roscoe so that all he could smell was rot and all he could see was “him” ripping out the baby’s eyes.

It is quite possible that he witnessed the cult offer the infant Leanne had manifested as Jericho to whoever “him” is. He is described as having a hook and being linked to the hay, which explains why the nanny was making the hay crosses. Furthermore, it may be confirmed that Jericho isn’t the reborn doll come to life, but something far more supernatural. As in season 1’s finale, Aunt May (Alison Elliott, Birth) tells Leanne that the two of them must return home. With Roscoe’s hypnotism revealing that a baby was sacrificed to “him,” it means that whatever infant she returned to the cult with is likely dead, but that doesn’t mean it was the real Jericho. In fact, it is probable that the Turner family’s actual son never came back; Julian, Sean, and Natalie never stated that the baby that arrived with Leanne resembles him in the slightest.

Roscoe’s hypnotism complicates Servant, but it also darkens the presence of Leanne’s cult. They pray to something that can only be described as demonic, who feeds on flesh and rips out the eyes of those sacrificed to him. It may even spell out all new dangers ahead for the Turners, as the cult doesn’t seem to care about who they torment as long as they decide that they’re deserving. Now that the powers of the cult are growing as the series progresses, it won’t be long until whatever Roscoe saw after his abduction in Servant manifests itself in front of Dorothy and Sean Turner.
