Servant: How Episode 1’s Security Password Change Foreshadows Season 2

Servant: How Episode 1’s Security Password Change Foreshadows Season 2

In M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant season 1, episode 1, “Reborn,” the Turner family’s home security passcode changes for a very particular reason – here’s why. Throughout the series, religious and biblical symbolism are key elements that move the story forward. If it weren’t for Leanne Grayson’s (Nell Tiger Free) ties to religion, baby Jericho would’ve never returned from the dead. While it may seem as though the passcode does not hold a substantial amount of weight to the series, it may actually act as a way of foreshadowing the events of season 2.

The series follows Dorothy (Lauren Ambrose, Wanderlust) and Sean Turner (Toby Kebbell, Black Mirror) following the death of their thirteen-week-old son Jericho. They hire a live-in nanny to take care of reborn doll that helped the grieving mother snap out of a catatonic state. After the lifeless doll comes to life, Sean suspects that the baby isn’t theirs and was likely stolen from another family. As he attempts to leave the house with Jericho, he types in “0603#,” which was the established passcode from episode 1, but the system locks him out and the alarm goes off. In episode 2, Dorothy inputs “0601#” and successfully turns it off. This is the only instance where this is the home security system passcode, which marks a major shift for the future of the series when biblical and religious significance is analyzed alongside it.

After Servant’s major season 1 ending reveal, it is confirmed that Leanne’s backstory involves a cult who may have mysterious powers and capabilities. Throughout the series, she writes names in her bible and prays, which causes the individual to suffer with an ailment or falter in some may. Leanne is a very powerful individual and may have been the source behind the passcode changing, as the numbers hold religious significance that could come into play in Servant season 2.

The bible verses in Servant are highly significant, as they emphasize 16:30 in episode 6 as Leanne watches a sermon on television. Throughout the series, these numbers appear in various forms. The passcode is 0603# and 0106#, which may be the director’s way of inserting the theme of the Turner’s sins in every way possible. Except, there are significant verses in the Book of Joshua that tell the story of the Battle of Jericho, which may be even more significant than the continuing theme of sin.

By the end of season 1, Leanne has disappeared and so has the living version of Jericho. In the Servant season 2 trailerthe Turners are on the hunt to get her to return with their son. The Book of Joshua 6:03 states “And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.” This may be a major clue as to how long the search for Jericho will take. The following passage mentions the seventh day, when seven trumpets are blown by seven priests. It is likely that the hunt for Leanne and the child could span a week’s time – or seven days – with Servant season 2 concluding at that moment. According to verse 1:06, the number shared by the second passcode, there will be major division that will test the courage and strength of God’s followers, which, by the end of season 1, both Dorothy and Sean seem to be. It may also allude to Leanne’s cult becoming divided at some point in season 2.

M. Night Shyamalan is known for his twists and intricate ways of foreshadowing future events in both his movies and TV shows. In Servant, he emphasizes specific scriptures at a matching timestamp – 16:30 is recited at 16:30 minutes into episode 6 – and weaves in the Battle of Jericho by referencing the Book of Joshua. Servant season 2 could very well be about a battle – or ongoing search – to find Leanne and Jericho. Therefore, the security passcode in season 1 of Servant was used in order to foreshadow the fact that the Turners will fight whoever they must in order to get Jericho back.
