Sebastian Stan Teases Anthony Mackie’s Captain America 4

Sebastian Stan teases what fans can expect from Anthony Mackie in Captain America 4. After persistent rumors, the Marvel Studios project was finally confirmed to be on its way. Written by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson, no release date has been set for the movie, but despite that, Stan is offering some details about it.

Ever since their chemistry became apparent in Captain America: Civil War, Stan’s Bucky Barnes and Mackie’s Sam Wilson have become somewhat of an odd couple in the MCU. After the events of Avengers: Endgame, they were given their own show on Disney+. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was supposed to kick off Phase 4, but due to schedule changes because of the coronavirus pandemic, it was pushed back a couple of months. Nonetheless, the show was well-received and by the end of it, Sam officially took on the mantle as Steve Rogers’ successor as the new Captain America.

On the heels of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Captain America 4 was finally formalized. But, as they are with all of their projects, Marvel Studios has been secretive about it. Plot details are still scarce at the moment, but in an interview with Kevin Polowy promoting his new series, Fresh, Stan shared his excitement over the film. He also said that Mackie will bring something new to the idea of what Captain America should be about. Finally, he compared it to Rocky but unfortunately didn’t expound on this. “But I’m very excited for that movie and I think he’s going to be great. He’s going to add a whole different feel to that idea. It kind of reminds me a little bit of Rocky, in some ways.

Since there’s barely anything known about Captain America 4, it’s curious if Stan’s Bucky will also appear in it. The actor didn’t give any kind of indication that he is going to be involved. In fact, he said in the same interview that Mackie has yet to reply to a text he sent last year. But given his comments about what Sam’s new Star-Spangled Avenger’s solo film might be like, it’s possible that he’s privy to certain information about its narrative. But that doesn’t mean that he will be in it. Despite the pair’s team-up in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, there’s a chance that Marvel Studios will be splitting them up so they can tackle their respective arcs separately. Without context, it’s difficult to predict what Stan exactly means when he compared Captain America 4 to Rocky, but perhaps it’s an implication that it will be an underdog story, which fits well with the character’s trajectory in the MCU.

As for Bucky, no word yet on when he will pop back up. Stan has been busy doing other projects outside the Marvel Studios sandbox. But considering how The Falcon and the Winter Soldier left his story without any conclusive ending, chances are that if a season 2 happens, it will be focused on him. Other than that, he could also do a cameo in Captain America 4 since Bucky and Sam have become good friends after Steve’s retirement.
