Netflix has released the official first look and cast announcement for its upcoming Scrooge: A Christmas CarolThe holiday classic has been reimagined countless times before, from The Muppet Christmas Carol to FX’s A Christmas Carol series in 2019. For this upcoming holiday season, Netflix is taking a stab at its own rendition of the timeless tale of curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge, this time directed by Stephen Donnelly.

Netflix has released two images from Scrooge. One photo gives a glimpse at Scrooge (Luke Evans) face-to-face with the terrifyingly chained-up ghost of Jacob Marley (Jonathan Pryce). Another photo shows Scrooge and two others looking concerned while peering through a frosty window that showcases the film’s CGI work. Netflix also confirmed the rest of Scrooge‘s cast, which includes Olivia Colman (the Past ghost), Trevor Dion Nicolas (Present), Johnny Flynn (Bob Cratchit), Jessie Buckley (Isabel Fezziwig), Fra Fee (Harry Huffam), Giles Terera (Tom Jenkins), and James Cosmo (Mr. Fezziwig). Take a look at the first few stills from the upcoming adaptation of A Christmas Carol below.

A Christmas Carol is a story that has been told and retold in many different ways over the years, so it will be interesting to see how Scrooge puts a fresh spin on it. Per Netflix’s official synopsis, Scrooge will feature reimagined songs from Leslie Bricusse, which should allow the film to stand apart from other versions. So far, the animation itself looks very lovely and poised to enchant audiences. Scrooge: A Christmas Carol will premiere on Netflix later this year.
