“Screw Batman, I Care About Gotham”: This Suicide Squad Antihero Needs to Take Bruce’s Place as Gotham’s Permanent Protector

Everyone knows that Batman is the defender of Gotham City, but there are plenty of other DC characters who love Gotham and want to defend it as well – including a seemingly ‘evil’ member of the Suicide Squad. While these characters often end up joining the Bat-Family and protecting the city as heroes, there are even villains who’ll lay their lives on the line to defend Gotham if necessary.

Suicide Squad #26 – by Rob Williams, Stjepan Sejic, and Pat Brosseau – took place during the Dark Knights: Metal event. When a coalition of evil Batmen invaded Earth, every hero had to fight against an evil, twisted version of Batman, as Gotham City was overrun. This resulted in the Suicide Squad having to battle against both Poison Ivy and a dark version of Robin.

Killer Croc Admitted Protecting Gotham City Means As Much To Him As It Does To Batman

Suicide Squad #26, Kiler Croc proclaims:

Waylon Jones was a young boy who had a terrible skin disease, which slowly morphed his body to be more and more like that of a crocodile. Having grown up in an abusive circus where he was shown off as a freak, Waylon gained a major mean streak and tried to use his enhanced strength to become a crime lord in Gotham City. This eventually brought him into conflict with Batman. Eventually, Waylon would try making a society of his own in the sewers, and gave up a life of crime, for the most part.

Killer Croc proved he wasn’t a pure villain when he laid his life down to save Gotham City from the forces of the Dark Multiverse in Suicide Squad #26. Killer Croc is someone who has mostly only known abuse in his life, but he has tried to give others a safe place where that doesn’t happen to them. Killer Croc has tried to run his own society in the sewers before for Gotham’s forsaken, and he even had his own hotel at one point. Killer Croc has always been more than just a villain, and his willingness to protect Gotham City proved that.

Suicide Squad #26, Killer Croc prepares to sacrifice himself against Dark Robin

As dark as Waylon has gotten at times, it has been proven that Killer Croc isn’t evil. He has shown the capacity to care for not just the entire city of Gotham, but the individual people in it as well. Waylon was someone that society cast out as a freak, and he has tried several times to give people in a similar position to him a safe place to stay. It’s usually only circumstance that pushes Waylon into becoming a criminal, which is why under the right conditions, the Suicide Squad‘s Killer Croc has proved can be Gotham’s protector, when Batman can’t.
