Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: Release Date, Trailer & Everything We Know

Ever since Netflix announced that a Scott Pilgrim anime was in the works, there has been a lot of talk of whether the original cast of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World would return and if it will follow the source material — and, much to the delight of fans of the cult franchise, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is delivering on both fronts. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World revolved around its titular meek-mannered protagonist as he attempted to woo Ramona Flowers by battling all of her seven exes. With a memorable rock soundtrack and over-the-top action, the film gained a loyal fanbase. Best described as a musical action rom-com, it has aged well with sarcastic jabs on genre clichés like love at first sight and the manic pixie dream girl archetype.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is the animated adaptation of Scott Pilgrim’s adventures, and already from the trailer it’s clear his story fits the anime medium like a glove. Even though Wright wrapped up the narrative of the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World comics, some wanted more of Scott, Ramona, and their annoyingly funny friends and exes. Hence, Netflix’s announcement about a Scott Pilgrim anime in 2023 came as a pleasant surprise. Netflix has already proved its credibility with acclaimed anime adaptations such as Castlevania and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners so it only made sense for the streaming giant to produce an anime adaptation of a film that already boasted the artistically exaggerated action and comedy reminiscent of several iconic anime series.

The Scott Pilgrim anime release date has been announced along with the show’s official title. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will be released on Netflix on November 17, 2023. The production has been quiet for quite some time and with the strikes throwing most productions into question, it was a pleasant surprise for fans that they would get the show before the end of the year.

Back in January 2022, there were rumors that Netflix was adapting a Scott Pilgrim anime series. After much speculation, Netflix’s confirmed the news on March 30, 2022, announcing that O’Malley will write and executive produce with BenDavid Grabinski (Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Happily). Wright will also serve as executive producer as he believes that an anime adaptation is an interesting way to go. O’Malley is likely to churn out a faithful adaptation of his literature, but Edgar Wright told Netflix that the comic book writer’s ideas are “way more adventurous than just a straight adaptation of the original books”.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Cast

Animated characters from Scott Pilgrim look on

A major reason behind the excitement for the Scott Pilgrim anime is the fact that much of the original ensemble of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is returning. This includes Michael Cera (Superbad, Arrested Development) as the titular punk slacker alongside Mary Elizabeth-Winstead (Birds of Prey, 10 Cloverfield Lane) as the “ninja delivery girl” Ramona. Other returning actors for the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off cast include Keiran Culkin (Succession) as Scott’s roommate Walter; Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) as Scott’s sister Stacey; Alison Pill (Star Trek: Picard) as Sex Bob-omb drummer Kim; Johnny Simmons (Jennifer’s Body) as the band’s fan Young Neil, and Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Recreation) and Mark Webber (Green Room) as the couple Julia and Stephen.

Of course, Scott and Ramona’s own ex-lovers are also bound to show up in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. This includes Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Ellen Wong (GLOW) returning as Scott’s exes, Envy and Knives, along with Ramona’s own League of Evil Exes: Satya Bhabha (Sense8) as Matthew; Chris Evans (Captain America) as Lucas; Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) as Todd; Jason Schwartzman (The Darjeeling Limited) as Gideon; and Mae Whitman (Good Girls) as Roxie. Many of the returning actors had become prominent mainstream stars following the release of Scott Pilgrim vs the World. As O’Malley told Netflix, “They’ve all gone on to do incredible things, but to me, they’re family,”.

Similarly, Wright pointed out how close-knit the Scott Pilgrim cast has been in real-life. Shedding light upon “the friendships forged for life”, the Cornetto Trilogy director also talked about how all actors continue being a part of an email chain. To quote Wright, “There — to this day — is still a group email with the entire cast on it, that’s been going since 2010. I was happy to be able to reach out to everyone with the news that we had finally come up with a way to continue the adventure. Seeing (and hearing) everyone come back to their roles has been a true pleasure.”

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Story Details

Scott Pilgrim with Ramona Flowers

Much like the comics that it drew inspiration from, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World dealt with Scott’s attempts to win over Ramona and fight off her aggressive ex-partners. While Scott Pilgrim executive producer, O’Malley, has confirmed that the anime series will be an adventurous adaptation of his own writings, a twist has to be expected. The general scenarios of Scott fighting Ramona’s exes and dealing with his personal issues can be provided with more depth in O’Malley’s enhanced storyline. It’ll also be interesting to see how they will adapt some of the best Scott Pilgrim vs the World fight scenes, and what changes they would make or tweak for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

Touching upon the visual aspects of the story, O’Malley said, “The action scenes will blow your mind. And there might be a few surprises along the way.” Scott’s band Sex Bomb-Omb will also play a major part in the Scott Pilgrim anime series, exploring the band’s chemistry, obsessive fans, and, of course, their contributions to the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack. Japanese pop group, Anamanaguchi, who had also composed Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game, return as a major contributor to the show’s soundtrack. Making the best use of animation to retell Scott’s story, O’Malley added, “Everyone is putting their heart and soul into this thing, and we’re having the most fun making it.”
