Schitt’s Creek Movie Could Still Happen, According to Dan Levy

After much speculation, Dan Levy shared that a Schitt’s Creek movie could happen sometime in the future. The sitcom focuses on the Roses, a wealthy family that unexpectedly loses their fortune and status due to some bad business dealings. They’re forced to move to Schitt’s Creek, a rural town they jokingly purchased in the past. The series, which aired on the Canadian network CBC, was created by Dan Levy alongside his father, Eugene Levy. The two play father and son in the show, with the Rose family rounded out by Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy.

Through 6 seasons, the Roses learn to shed their spoiled personalities and chart a new course for their lives. Schitt’s Creek initially premiered in January 2015 but did not receive widespread attention until it became available on Netflix after season 3’s release. Following that, the series found critical acclaim, including praise for its positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters. The show concluded in April 2020 and immediately swept the comedy categories at the Emmys.

Since that success, many fans have been wondering if a Schitt’s Creek movie might be happening down the line. According to an E! News interview with Dan Levy, a Schitt’s Creek movie is possible—just not yet. Levy previously shared that he’d do a movie, but only if the team came up with a really, really good idea. In his interview with E!, Levy shared a similar sentiment, but with an additional caveat—some time needs to pass before a Schitt’s Creek movie happens. Read his statement below:

“I would love for there to be. I’m not ruling it out. It’s very flattering that people want to know, but I would just say generally I think you need to let the good things settle for a minute. Let people finish the show. Let people sort of take a breath. And then if people are still interested and an idea comes to me and our cast is wanting to do it, then great.”

Levy continued to explain that the crew ended the show on a high note instead of dragging it out to the point where the storylines became stale, saying that he was aware of “overstaying your welcome.” So, although Levy’s general statement means a Schitt’s Creek movie won’t be happening anytime soon, he’s definitely leaving the window wide open for future Rose family shenanigans. What those storylines might entail is unclear—some fans are hoping for more news on Alexis’ life in New York, while others want a taste of David and Patrick’s married life. Whatever the future movie might be, Levy seems positive that it’ll have to come from a strong idea.

His statement on waiting it out before releasing a movie also echoes many shows that are in the process of being rebooted or remade. The majority are shows that originally premiered in the 90s or early 2000s, like Friends, Charmed, and Saved by the Bell. These series waited over a decade for their revivals, but in the case of Schitt’s Creek, the series only just ended. However, the outcry of fans wanting a Schitt’s Creek movie proves how beloved and powerful the show truly is. Even if a movie never happens, Schitt’s Creek is on track for a solidified place in the sitcom hall of fame.
