Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver’s Gross Romance Nearly Killed Captain America

Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver’s Gross Romance Nearly Killed Captain America

Few moments live in infamy in the pages of Marvel Comics than the repulsive Ultimate Marvel romance between Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, but the siblings’ relationship nearly got another hero, Captain America, killed. In The Ultimates 3 #1 by Marvel Comics, Steve Rogers’s comments on the outfit Wanda Maximoff wears significantly upsets Pietro. He threatens to kill Captain America while stating the Scarlet Witch should always be by his side. The scene is as creepy as it sounds and, later, gets worse.

The Ultimates Marvel universe was a chance for Marvel Comics to reinvent some of its greatest characters, while the Avengers were transformed into the Ultimates. Unfortunately, while the imprint had several successful titles, most notably Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley, it’s often remembered for one of the worst comics Marvel has ever published: The Ultimates 3. The comic was edgy, gross, and featured one of the most disgusting romances the publisher has ever approved: Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Yes, the siblings were in a romance in the Ultimate Marvel universe.

Jeph Loeb and Joe Madureira’s The Ultimates 3 #1 sets the stage for shock value coming later as the comic opens with Iron Man and Black Widow’s sex tape becoming public. However, that seems like nothing when Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are reintroduced, as they affectionately hold hands highlighting their romance despite being siblings. Captain America confronts Wanda about her superhero costume, suggesting she wear something less revealing. Quicksilver quickly tells Steve Rogers that he’s overstepped his bounds and gets so angry that he threatens to kill him if he comes near his sister again.

Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver’s Gross Romance Nearly Killed Captain America

Captain America tells The Wasp that he could tell Pietro wanted to kill him just by the look he gave him. When his fellow hero points out that they really love each other, Rogers brushes it off, saying, of course they do since they’re brother and sister. However, the Wasp tells him they are “in love” with each other, and it’s much more than siblings caring about one another. Later, Wolverine would confirm that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch took their romance to the next level, which remains one of the grossest story developments that Marvel Comics has ever published.

Quicksilver’s anger increased from zero to one hundred over Captain America’s comments about Scarlet Witch. So much so that he nearly used his incredible powers to kill his fellow hero. When actually, Steve Rogers had no idea about their romance, as Pietro seemed to think that his fellow Ultimates teammate was trying to get in between his relationship with his sister. Thankfully, he didn’t act on his threat to kill Captain America. Otherwise, Quicksilver’s Ultimate Marvel romance with Scarlet Witch would have become somehow even worse if he murdered the superteam’s leader. In the end, it’s best everyone forget The Ultimates 3 storyline ever happened.
