Saw 11 Is The Perfect Chance To Bring Back The Franchise’s Original Protagonist

Saw 11 Is The Perfect Chance To Bring Back The Franchise’s Original Protagonist

The Saw franchise will continue to expand with Saw XI, and if it follows the style of the previous movie, it will be the perfect chance to bring back the franchise’s original protagonist. In 2003, James Wan and Leigh Whannell made a short film (now known as Saw 0.5) which served to pitch the concept of what would become one of the most popular franchises in the horror genre. The saga kicked off in 2004 with Saw, which introduced the audience to John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell), a serial killer who trapped his victims in elaborate life-threatening situations to “test” their will to survive.

Saw was a critical and commercial success, making way for a franchise with ten movies (including a spin-off titled Spiral). Saw X shook things up by being a prequel and taking the audience back to the time between Saw and Saw II, thus bringing back John Kramer and his apprentices Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) and Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor). Like many other times in the franchise, Saw X isn’t the end, and a sequel, simply titled Saw XI, is now in development – and if it’s also a prequel, it can bring back Allison Kerry (Dina Meyer), who served as the saga’s original protagonist.

Placing all of the Saw movies in order may be more difficult than many casual fans of the franchise realize, with the timeline often being confusing.

Allison Kerry’s Saw 11 Return Would Fit Perfectly For The Franchise’s Timeline

As the man who started the Jigsaw murders and inspired copycats, John Kramer is the main villain in the Saw franchise even after his death, but when it comes to the heroic character leading the saga, that spot belonged to Allison Kerry. Kerry was a homicide detective for the Metropolitan Police Department, and she appeared in the first three movies in the Saw saga. Kerry was involved in the investigation of the Jigsaw murders since the first movie, but had a bigger role in Saw II and Saw III, working alongside Detective Matthews in Saw II when his son was abducted by Jigsaw and becoming a victim of Amanda’s traps in Saw III.

Now, although Saw XI has been confirmed and announced to arrive in theaters on September 27, 2024, no more details about the story, characters, and their place in the Saw timeline have been revealed. Given the critical and commercial success of Saw X, it wouldn’t be surprising if Saw XI follows its steps and is also a prequel, allowing it to bring Allison Kerry back without feeling forced or having to retcon past movies. Thanks to her role in the first three Saw movies and pursuit of Kramer, Allison Kerry essentially became the franchise’s protagonist, and her story can be further expanded if she returns in Saw XI.

Saw 11 Bringing Allison Kerry Back Could Add To The Tragedy Of Saw III

After spending a long time investigating the Jigsaw murders, Kerry ended up becoming a target when she was abducted by Amanda and Hoffman. Although Kerry did what she was instructed to and thus would have survived, the trap was rigged by Amanda and killed her anyway. Now, Saw X set up Amanda and Hoffman’s return if Saw XI is also a prequel (but a sequel to Saw X), and if it brings Allison Kerry back as well, it can explore their shared stories a lot more. Kerry was clearly a threat to Kramer, Amanda, and Hoffman, but Amanda’s pressure to win John over led her to rig her trap, which later impacted her relationship with John, while Hoffman took advantage of this.

The Kerry-Amanda-Hoffman dynamic goes a lot deeper than what was seen in the first three Saw movies and in flashbacks, but Kerry didn’t deserve to die, especially not in such a gruesome way. Saw XI can explore this and add more layers to the events of Saw III and more emotional depth to the new movie, and it only has to bring Allison Kerry back.
