When Cruel Intentions was released in 1999, it garnered attention for numerous reasons. Its racy subject matter, coupled with a cast of young up-and-coming stars, gave the film an appeal, which saw it earning over $76 million worldwide from a $10.5 million budget. In addition, as Gellar said, the scene won an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss, as the scene has become notorious in pop culture.

Their kiss also became the subject of several parodies, with movies like Not Another Teen Movie spoofing the scene because it was instantly recognizable. However, much of what Cruel Intentions featured was also considered controversial by certain demographics, further sparking interest from others, with Gellar and Blair’s kiss being a driving force on both sides. While it wasn’t the first same-sex kiss in a movie, it did garner a high level of attention.

At the time of Cruel Intentions‘ release, Selma Blair was just beginning to make a name for herself, coming off minor roles in movies like Can’t Hardly Wait. However, Gellar had already appeared in I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Cruel Intentions able to play off casting her in a unique role she hadn’t tackled before. While Cruel Intentions managed to spawn lackluster sequels and a TV series that never got off the ground, the original film is still remembered for its iconic kiss.
