The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra launch is right around the corner, but how will it compare to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra? It has been more than a year since Samsung launched a Galaxy Note series device in spite of the company hosting two Galaxy Unpacked events in 2021. The first was in January when Samsung revealed the Galaxy S21 series and the second was in August when Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldable phones.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was launched in 2020 for $1,299. The smartphone came with a stunning display, a myriad of features related to the S Pen, and a sleek design. In the same year, Apple revealed its iPhone 12 lineup with a complete redesign that included flat edges. Since the Note 20 Ultra had a large form factor, it was directly compared with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the largest iPhone in the series.
Apparently, a Reddit user claiming to be a Verizon sales representative has seen the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra in person and posted details on the experience. The iSmokeGSCookies Reddit user says that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra looks “exactly” like the Note 20 Ultra, is similar in size, and houses an S Pen. iSmokeGSCookies also mentions that the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s cameras don’t protrude all that much with the back panel almost flat. The upcoming flagship was also said to feature 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage with the base model, and 12GB of RAM with the 256GB and 512GB storage models. Lastly, it was mentioned that the S22 Ultra has larger camera sensors than the Note 20 Ultra. Drawing on these observations and past leaks, it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra could be viewed as the next Galaxy Note smartphone.
A Galaxy S Phone With An S Pen
The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra features a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED display with up to 120Hz refresh rate and support for HDR10+. It is equipped with a Snapdragon 865 5G chipset (in select markets including the US) and an Exynos 990 (elsewhere), accompanied by up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. For taking photos, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a triple camera setup on the back. In contrast, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is said to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (the US and select markets) and Exynos 2200 (elsewhere), which would deliver a significant improvement in performance compared to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.
Additionally. the Galaxy S22 Ultra is understood to feature a quad-rear camera setup consisting of a 108MP primary lens, along with a 12MP ultra-wide sensor and 10MP sensors for 3X and 10X optical zoom. Another major difference between the two smartphones is the latency of the S Pen. While the S Pen supports 9ms latency on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, it will reportedly support 2.9ms latency on the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Overall, the upcoming S22 Ultra looks like a substantial upgrade from previous Note devices, while still looking like a Note phone in general. For those wanting to experience the latest hardware and software from Samsung, it is probably worth waiting for the new Galaxy S22 Ultra to become available.
