Samantha’s 8 Funniest Love Interests In Sex And The City, Ranked

Samantha’s 8 Funniest Love Interests In Sex And The City, Ranked

Sex and the City‘s Samantha Jones, played by the legendary Kim Cattrall, is easily one of the most iconic sitcom characters of the past few decades — and her funniest love interests throughout the show added even more charm to her character arc. A smart and sassy leader of her own PR firm, Samantha made history with her sexual openness and assertion that she didn’t need a relationship to complete her life. Samantha had a few long-lasting relationships throughout Sex and the City, but many of her love interests didn’t stick around for more than one episode.

Compared to Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte, Samantha easily had the most sexual partners throughout the series. From a college student with the same name as her, to a dildo model, to a man who made his mark on her body hair, Samantha was always getting herself into incredibly comedic situations with the men she encountered. Some of these partners inspired real growth in her character, but most of them were purely for comic relief.

8 Sam Jones

Season 3, Episode 17: “What Goes Around Comes Around”

Samantha’s 8 Funniest Love Interests In Sex And The City, Ranked

Due to a phone number mix-up, Samantha learns about a party being thrown by a man with the same name as her: Sam Jones. Never one to turn down an invitation, Samantha attends with Carrie. When they arrive, they quickly realize Sam Jones is a college student, and the party is at an NYU dorm. When Sam Jones sees Samantha Jones, he instantly falls for her and begs her to take his virginity. Samantha sleeps with him but regrets it when his obsession continues. While the idea of Samantha meeting a man with the same name is hilarious, the ensuing storyline is a bit too upsetting to be her funniest.

7 The Turtle

Season 1, Episode 9: “The Turtle And The Hare”

Timothy Wheeler as The Turtle in Sex and the City

Early in Sex and the City, after suffering a painful rejection, Samantha gets desperate. She turns to Bernie Turtletaub, a socially inept man with bad breath that the girls met at a “singles” table at a wedding. Samantha attempts to use her fabulous PR skills to turn “The Turtle” into a man she’d be proud to be seen with. While she succeeds at changing his style, she can’t change his personality, and the relationship is doomed. Watching Samantha work her makeover magic is certainly entertaining, but The Turtle isn’t as funny or as developed as her partners later on in the series.

6 Mr. Too Big

Season 2, Episode 18: “Ex And The City”

John Enos III as Mr. Too Big in Sex and the City

In Sex and the City‘s season 2 finale, each of the girls is reminded of an ex-love they miss deeply. Carrie misses Big, and Charlotte misses her childhood horse — but Samantha’s story is unsurprisingly less sentimental. Samantha meets a man who immediately strikes her with his cocky attitude, but he overwhelms her with the size of his manhood. While she loves a challenge, Samantha can’t make it work with “Mr. Too Big.” She brings home the episode’s punchline by announcing that she misses her ex-boyfriend James, who had the opposite kind of size problem. While the man himself wasn’t too memorable, he clearly had a lasting effect on Samantha.

5 Thor

Season 2, Episode 6: “The Cheating Curve”

Chris John as Thor in Sex and the City holding up Samantha's leg

Samantha’s relationship with Thor starts out like a typical fling for her. She meets him at the gym and engages him in several steamy training sessions, culminating in a night of even steamier sex. Thor’s quirks are soon revealed, as the pair take a bath together and Thor insists on shaving Samantha’s pubic hair into the shape of a lightning bolt. At first, Samantha loves the new design, but she soon realizes that she isn’t as special to Thor as she thought. In the gym’s sauna, Samantha runs into another woman with the same signature lightning bolt. She dumps Thor for his unfaithfulness, but also for his lack of originality.

4 Ed

Season 2, Episode 8: “The Man, The Myth, The Viagra”

Bill McHugh and Kim Cattrall as Ed and Samantha sitting down and staring into each other's eyes in Sex and the City

There are many storylines in Sex and the City — most notably Carrie’s relationship with Mr. Big — that involve the girls dating older men. None of them are quite as old as Ed, who is in his 70s. Samantha is always on the lookout for rich and powerful men, and Ed quickly impresses her with his close friendship with Donald Trump. Samantha decides to look past Ed’s age and attempt a relationship with him, but his lavish gifts don’t quite make up for his aging physique. Samantha’s relationship with Ed is short-lived, but it makes for one of the funniest examples of Samantha’s lust for money and power leading her astray.

3 David and David

Season 2, Episode 16: “Was It Good For You?”

samantha with david and david on sex and the city

After working her way through every eligible man in Manhattan, not much seems to shock Samantha Jones. But in Sex and the City season 2, she’s thrown for a loop when her friends — a gay couple named David and David — ask her to join them in the bedroom. Samantha is flattered that the couple chose her to be their first woman, and she’s determined to impress them. However, she’s quickly humbled when David and David see her naked and decide not to go through with it. Samantha seems like she has an unexplained power over all men, so it’s refreshing to see some men can resist her charms.

2 Garth West

Season 3, Episode 13: “Escape From New York”

James MacDonald as Garth West smiling in Sex and the City

In Sex and the City season 3, Carrie decides she needs a break from New York and takes the girls to Los Angeles. Samantha wastes no time adjusting to the city and soon runs into her first celebrity: dildo model Garth West. Naturally, Samantha is attracted to Garth and keeps Carrie awake all night with their loud lovemaking in the neighboring hotel room. Garth is known for his “perfect girth,” and Samantha gets the rest of the girls their own copy of his famous physique. While Garth seems like a perfect match for Sam, their relationship ends before it really begins. Fortunately, Garth leaves Samantha with the perfect souvenir.

1 Adam Ball

Season 3, Episode 9: “Easy Come, Easy Go”Split image of Bobby Cannavale as Adam Ball in Sex and the City

Samantha’s relationship with Adam Ball is simple. She’s attracted to him but hates the taste of his “funky spunk. When Samantha brings this up to the girls, Charlotte is so scandalized that she gets up and leaves the restaurant, a sign of a top-tier Samantha storyline. Samantha is determined to fix the problem by changing Adam’s diet, but this quickly backfires. Eventually, she offers Adam a compromise: if he can handle the taste of his own product, so can she. The following scene is one of the show’s funniest moments, made even better by the fact that Bobby Cannavale takes his performance so seriously.
