Saints Row’s New Gameplay Trailer Embraces The Series’ Absurdity

A new gameplay trailer for Saints Row was released during The Game Awards 2021, showing off more of the mayhem that players can cause in the upcoming reboot. The Saints Row reboot was initially revealed at another Geoff Keighley-hosted event, Gamescom, back in August, but got a bit of a negative reaction. Many felt the tone strayed too far away from the original games, especially since it’s missing characters from the series.

Nonetheless, Volition has pushed forward to try and prove its vision to both fans and naysayers alike. The new Saints Row has already had some gameplay revealed, but it hasn’t totally won over those that were put off by the reveal. Although Volition has already made a steady effort to ensure this is a Saints Row game through and through, the latest trailer may help paint the picture rattled fans have been hoping for.

The new Saints Row gameplay trailer puts the absurdity the series is known for on full display. Although there’s been plenty of gameplay in the last few months, this trailer demonstrates why Saints Row has been such a renowned open-world franchise for so many years and has managed to survive even in the age of Grand Theft Auto and Mafia. Whether or not it ends up being fun to play remains to be seen, but it’s certainly looking like it’ll be quite the spectacle when it releases in 2022.

A few weeks ago, Volition announced that Saints Row’s release date would be delayed from February to August 2022. Although that’s a pretty sizable delay, the developer promised it was to refine the game it was making. The delay will not be used to cater to some of the more severe negativity surrounding the game, but instead, make sure it’s extra polished. Although not explicitly stated, it’s likely Volition also made the decision to delay Saints Row based on the crowded period of releases at the start of 2022.

Not only can Volition leverage the extra time to improve Saints Row, but it also won’t be overshadowed by competitors like Horizon Forbidden WestDying Light 2, and Elden RingSaints Row is shaping up quite nicely as is, but some extra time in the oven can’t hurt, especially after a number of publishers recently shipped a bunch of broken games back to back. Volition’s last game, Agents of Mayhem, was a mixed bag for many critics, so hopefully, the team can come back with a solid reboot of the storied franchise.
