Ryan Gosling’s Viral Beavis & Butt-Head Appearances Are Great, But A Live-Action Movie Shouldn’t Happen

Ryan Gosling’s Viral Beavis & Butt-Head Appearances Are Great, But A Live-Action Movie Shouldn’t Happen

After Ryan Gosling and Mikey Day’s viral Beavis & Butt-Head sketch, the chances of a live-action movie are better than they’ve ever been, but it still shouldn’t be made. Gosling and Day recently made several appearances as Beavis and Butt-Head, most notably in a Saturday Night Live skit. After their sketch went viral online, Gosling and Day became Beavis and Butt-Head again at the Fall Guy premiere. As the popularity of their sketch has endured, talk of a live-action version of Beavis & Butt-Head has surfaced, but it might not be for the best.

Ryan Gosling has played plenty of iconic roles in his career, and he could add Beavis to that list thanks to how popular his recent Saturday Night Live appearance. The sketch was hilarious, and it led to one of the funniest breaks in SNL history, which only helped it gain even more popularity and spark more interest in a live-action movie. Though casting Gosling and Day in a live-action Beavis & Butt-Head movie could happen, there’s one major problem that could keep their potential movie from happening.

Ryan Gosling’s Beavis & Butt-Head Appearances Show The Potential For A Live-Action Movie

Gosling’s Performance Was Hilarious & Made The Chances Of A Live-Action Movie Much Better

Gosling and Day have made a few appearances as Beavis and Butt-Head, but all of them have been hilarious. The popularity of his appearances have also proved that a live-action movie could work and be genuinely funny for a few reasons. The biggest factor in the movie’s chances is Ryan Gosling himself, as he’s clearly capable of playing Beavis, and he would grant the movie a lot of popularity by way of his own fame. The sketch also proved that the prosthetic makeup would actually work well in live-action, but there’s a bigger problem that would have to be solved first.

Ryan Gosling & Mikey Day’s Age Present A Problem For Beavis & Butt-Head

Gosling & Day Don’t Fit The Ages Of Teenage Or Adult Beavis & Butt-Head

The main problem with casting Ryan Gosling and Mikey Day as Beavis and Butt-Head is their age. The most iconic version of Beavis and Butt-Head is them as teenagers; it’s how they’re depicted in most of the movies and shows in the franchise. Gosling and Day, however, are grown men in their 40s – significantly older than teenagers – so casting them for a live-action movie wouldn’t make it feel like classic Beavis & Butt-Head. In their SNL appearance, they were just regular people who happened to look like Beavis and Butt-Head. Part of the reason for that is they couldn’t believably pass as teenagers.

Mike Judge’s Beavis & Butt-Head, the recent franchise revival, does portray adult versions of its titular characters, but even they present problems for Gosling and Day. In that show, Beavis and Butt-Head are well into middle-age and are much worse for wear than them. Part of the joke of portraying Beavis and Butt-Head as adults is showing how poorly they would fare in the adult world, and Gosling and Day just wouldn’t be able to pull off that element of the gag. They’re too old to be teenage versions of the characters, yet too young and well-adjusted to play them as adults.

Adult versions of Beavis and Butt-Head also only really work in the larger context of Mike Judge’s Beavis & Butt-Head. That show focuses on the characters in their teenage years, which helps it maintain the feel of the original series, and uses episodes focusing on them as adults to supplement it. Gosling and Day would only be able to play the adult versions, meaning their movie wouldn’t have the teenage versions – the franchise’s most recognizable aspect and the core of the entire franchise – to rely on.

A Live-Action Beavis & Butt-Head Movie Isn’t Impossible, But It Would Have Many Challenges

While no plans for a live-action Beavis & Butt-Head have been announced, that doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t happen. Ryan Gosling has proven in the past that he’s willing to take on silly and comedic roles as long as he likes them enough, so taking part in a live-action Beavis & Butt-Head isn’t outside the realm of possibility for him. There’s also been a number of Saturday Night Live sketches that have become movies, and since Gosling and Day’s Beavis and Butt-Head sketch has become so popular, the executives at NBC and Paramount may see a movie version as potentially profitable.

Ryan Gosling has cemented himself as one of the most consistent and versatile actors of the 21st century who has succeeded in multiple genres.

Still, a live-action Beavis & Butt-Head is far from guaranteed. While Gosling might be willing to take on the role, he would also come with a hefty salary and a full schedule. Additionally, movies take a considerable amount of time to make, so by the time the live-action film would actually be released, Gosling and Day’s sketch could be entirely forgotten. The movie would then lose out on all the popularity and hype it currently enjoys. It’s hard to say for certain whether Ryan Gosling could appear in a live-action Beavis & Butt-Head, but if he does, there will be several challenges the movie has to overcome.
