Ryan Gosling “Knows Nothing” About Barbie 2 (Except How Ken Should Change)

Ryan Gosling “Knows Nothing” About Barbie 2 (Except How Ken Should Change)

Ryan Gosling has shared how little he knows about Barbie 2, though he has thoughts on how his character could change in the future. The actor starred in the 2023 Greta Gerwig comedy Barbie as Ken, the dim-witted and insecure boyfriend of Barbie (Margot Robbie). In a surprise twist, the movie follows Ken’s descent into villainy as he attempts to change Barbie Land into a patriarchal society after visiting the real world and learning how it operates.

Per CBR, Ryan Gosling shared his perspective on the possible Barbie 2 during a Q&A at BFI Soundbank in London. The star revealed that so far “we really know nothing.” However, he made a suggestion that, if he is cast in a potential sequel, he could play a less fit version of the character, suggesting that he be named “Husky Ken” or “Sandwich Ken.” Read his full quote below:

Oh, I’m not going anywhere near that. We really know nothing. Can it be a husky Ken? Can I play Husky Ken, like Sandwich Ken? Can I play that Ken next time?

Why Hasn’t Barbie 2 Been Announced Yet?

While it seems that Gosling is telling the truth, it is nonetheless surprising that Barbie 2 has not yet been officially greenlit. The movie, which premiered in July opposite Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as part of the viral “Barbenheimer” weekend, quickly became the highest-grossing movie of 2023. At the time of writing, the Barbie box office has earned a worldwide total of $1.44 billion, which would seem likely to guarantee a sequel given the fact that its production budget was less than $150 million.

The availability of the star-studded cast could potentially be an impediment to progress on Barbie 2. For instance, Gosling’s quote indicates that he may be interested in returning as Ken, but he also has many commitments including promoting his 2024 movie The Fall Guy as well as filming upcoming roles in projects such as Wolfman and The Gray Man 2. However, Margot Robbie was a producer on Barbie and one of the driving forces behind it getting made, so it seems that she would potentially take on a similar position for its sequel, ensuring her return in the title role.

The Barbie ending also presents an issue for a sequel, as it sees Barbie turning her back on Barbie Land to live a life in the real world as a human woman. This may be causing issues in getting a potential storyline and screenplay together for the sequel. However, in such an IP-driven theatrical marketplace, it still seems unlikely that Barbie 2 won’t be announced at some point in the coming year.
