Russo Brothers: Anna Kendrick as Squirrel Girl is ‘Perfect Casting’

Squirrel Girl might seem like an obscure superhero film idea, and why this comic book character certainly is no staple of popular culture, neither was a crime fighting duo by the name of Groot and Rocket Raccoon before Guardians of the Galaxy only a few short years ago. In fact, Ant-Man was a name that, until recently, a majority of moviegoing audiences had never even heard of – at least not before the Paul Rudd and Michael Douglass-led film just last summer. Suffice it to say, Disney and Marvel Studios have now mastered the art of turning relative unknowns into household names who contain the ability to garner box-office and critical success.

The character of Squirrel Girl, however, has attracted a lot more attention recently with comments made by Anna Kendrick, who suggested that she would make an excellent Doreen Green, a.k.a. Squirrel Girl. Rumors surrounding a potential film starring the obscure comic book character have been circulating since a trademark was filed by Marvel back in 2014 – and with a recent Tweet by Edgar Wright calling for a Squirrel Girl film starring Kendrick (whom he directed in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), the web has once again started buzzing about this seemingly long-shot Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

With the internet now buzzing about the potential casting choice, it has come out that Kendrick has a few influential fans of her own from within the Marvel camp. Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo stated in an interview with Yahoo Movies that Anna Kendrick would make a “perfect” Squirrel Girl. To quote:

It would be perfect casting, and we’re huge Anna Kendrick fans.

Russo Brothers: Anna Kendrick as Squirrel Girl is ‘Perfect Casting’

The Russo Brothers did go on to state that they are unlikely to introduce the character in the upcoming MCU team up film, Avengers: Infinity War. That said, the directing duo did not deny the fact another new character could make their debut in the upcoming Avengers blockbuster, potentially the recently-cast Captain Marvel (Brie Larson).

While none of these comments confirm an Anna Kendrick casting as Doreen Green, it is encouraging for fans of the talented actress to see support for her in a comic book role. Marvel Studios has proven that they are after talent, especially after the aforementioned casting of Room star (and Oscar-winner) Brie Larson.

It seems as though the Russo Brothers have enough on their plate between balancing the Avengers team, along with possibly introducing Captain Marvel in the upcoming Marvel Studios blockbuster – so bringing in another brand new, relative unknown appears rather unlikely. With all of the hype surrounding the character as of late, maybe fans of the character as well as Kendrick might hear some good news from Kevin Feige and company in the near future.
