Russian Doll: What Happened To The Krugerrands

Russian Doll: What Happened To The Krugerrands

Warning: Contains spoilers for Russian Doll season 2.

In Russian Doll season 2, Nadia Vulvokov reclaims her family’s missing Krugerrands, but they go missing from the time train and the reason is never fully explained. Russian Doll is known for being an enigmatic show, and the fate of the Kruggerands could easily be chalked up as another unanswered question for the show. However, the Russian Doll season 2 finale does give enough hints to understand what happened to the Krugerrands and why.

In Russian Doll season 2, when Nadia Vulvokov (Natasha Lyonne) travels back in time to 1944 to inhabit the body of her grandmother, Vera Peschauer (Ilona McCrea), she is able to reclaim the family valuables from the Nazis. In 1968, the older Vera (Irén Bordán), once again inhabited by Nadia, is able to pawn those valuables but can only receive the Kruggerands in exchange, marking their entry into the family history. In 1982, Nadia, now in the body of her mother, Nora (Chloë Sevigny), steals the Krugerrands with Chez (Sharlto Copley).

While Nadia is able to reclaim the Krugerrands once again even after Nora spent them, when she attempts to take them on the train back to 2022, the Krugerrands disappear from the train when she isn’t looking. While it might be assumed that the Krugerrands were stolen from the train, a scene in the Russian Doll season 2 finale shows that the bag of Krugerrands has landed in the Void outside of time. Nadia and Alan end up in the Void after they break time by taking the baby Nadia, who belongs in 1982 to 2022, providing room for them to fall out of time. It can be inferred, that when Nadia tried to bring the inanimate Krugerrands to 2022, a similar time breakage happened and the gold coins simply slipped out of time, appearing to disappear from the train.

Russian Doll: What Happened To The Krugerrands

In Russian Doll season 2, very little is explained about the Void. Alan’s grandmother (Carolyn Michelle Smith), who appears to be a form of timekeeper along with Horse (Brendan Sexton III), claims that it is an area that is simply forgotten about. Her lines are vague enough that she could be simply talking about the physical space under the city; however, Agnes’s lines specifically to Alan make it clear she knows more about time than would be expected. Ultimately, in Russian Doll season 2, the Void is simply where things end up when they get lost from time, and is likely to be explored further in Russian Doll season 3.

When Nadia Vulvokov lands in the Void in the Russian Doll season 2 finale, she is still holding her baby self. At that point, she discovers the Krugerrands in their bag floating in the water of the Void. However, she realizes that she is not able to carry the heavy gold coins and her infant self at the same time. Letting the Krugerrands go symbolizes Nadia’s acceptance of the past and the realization that they were indeed a “Coney Island” as Chez suggested and were ultimately weighing her down. In the Russian Doll timeline, Nadia was always responsible for the family getting the Krugerrands, and also for them being lost again. Having accepted that fact, it is unlikely that the Krugerrands will return in Russian Doll season 3.
