Russian Doll Season 2 & Natasha Lyonne Praised By Rian Johnson

Director Rian Johnson praises Russian Doll season 2 and its star, Natasha Lyonne. Released on Netflix in 2019, Russian Doll quickly became a hit with audiences, telling the story of a cynical New Yorker named Nadia (Lyonne) who attempts to find her way out of a time loop that has her constantly reliving the same birthday party over and over. Russian Doll season 1 featured eight episodes and was exceedingly popular with critics. The comedy-drama series boasts a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score and has won multiple Emmy awards.

It was announced not long after the season 1 premiere that Russian Doll would be returning for season 2. Plot details for the Russian Doll season 2 remained under wraps for a long time as production got underway, but a trailer was released in early April, teasing a new mystery for Nadia to untangle. The Russian Doll season 2 trailer reveals that the new episodes will take place in an entirely new time period, the 1980s, and heavily feature a New York City subway system. In addition to Lyonne, Russian Doll season 2 sees the return of Charlie Barnett, Greta Lee, Rebecca Henderson, and Elizabeth Ashley, while newcomers include Annie Murphy, Sharlto Copley, and Carolyn Michelle Smith.

In a new tweet, Johnson, who is best known for directing Knives Out, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Looper, praised Russian Doll season 2 and its star. Johnson calls the show “the most ambitious thing on tv right now.” He also lovingly refers to Lyonne as an “absolute maniac.” Check out Johnson’s tweet below:

Russian Doll season 2 hasn’t even been out on Netflix for a full day at the time of writing, but reactions to the new season are already pouring in. Many critics and fans alike are praising Russian Doll season 2 for its inventiveness and for Lyonne’s strong performance. Going significantly bigger and bolder for season 2 has clearly paid off for Johnson as a viewer, with the director even calling the new season “a work of art.” Johnson and Lyonne are evidently also creatively aligned, with the two teaming up for a new series called Poker Face for Peacock.

While boasting a time-traveling premise, Russian Doll always remains focused on Nadia, its central character. The show explores themes of loss and trauma, delving deep into Nadia’s psyche, while still remaining exciting and mysterious. While Johnson is far from the only person on Twitter to praise the show, it must be rewarding for the creative minds behind the series to receive such a positive review from a writer and director of Rian Johnson’s caliber. Now that Russian Doll season 2 is available to watch on Netflix, audiences can see for themselves whether they agree with his glowing review.
