A new banner for Runaways offers our best look yet at Marvel’s teen superhero team. Marvel is currently having their busiest year yet, and the final stretch is absolutely packed. Thor: Ragnarok is dominating in theaters, The Punisher is set to debut next week, and Inhumans will soon wrap and lead into season 5 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Meanwhile, Marvel’s first collaboration with Hulu is almost upon us. After years in development as a film, Runaways is finally heading to TV and looks to be fairly faithful to the hit comic.
The latest trailer for Runaways offered a better idea of how the show will adapt the first volume of the Marvel comics. Though it will take some liberties, the idea of a group of kids discovering their parents run a supervillain cabal is certainly still intact. We also got to see many of the kids’ abilities on display, proving the series won’t shy away from superpowers. Now, a brand-new shot of the main characters give us a further tease of their powers and their parents’ role in the show.

EW released a new banner for Runaways that features the 6 main characters and their menacing parents behind them. Dressed in the robes they wear during the sacrificial ceremony, this is how the kids will first see their folks and learn the truth. Of course, that won’t be the end of their parents’ influence on their lives. Luckily, they’ll also start to see their powers awaken at the same time—which are teased in the new poster.
From left to right we see Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes, with her pet velociraptor Old Lace teased from just out of frame. A gift from her time-traveling parents, Gert has a psychic length with the creature. Next is Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez, a slight variation of the young mutant Molly Hayes in the comics. Possessing super-strength, the show looks to have given her glowing eyes to indicate her power. There’s no word yet on wether she’ll be an Inhuman or augmented in some other way, though, as Marvel can’t use the idea of mutants.
In the middle are Rhenzy Feliz as Alex Wilder and Lyrica Okana as Nico Minoru. Alex is the least powered of the group, merely possessing a keen mind for strategy. Nico, meanwhile, can cast all sorts of spells with her Staff of One. Next to Nico is Chase Stein and his Fistigon, played by Gregg Sulkin. Though a dumb jock of sorts in the comics, the Chase in Runaways will build his Fistigons and be more of a tech whiz. Finally, there’s Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean on the far left. We’ve seen Karolina’s powers in the trailer, but here we get a tease of the bracelet her parents make her wear that suppresses her alien abilities. Of course, Karolina doesn’t know any of this until after the show kicks off.
The idea behind Runaways was to channel the concepts of growing up into a superhero story. As such, rebellion against parents becomes fighting evil supervillain parents, and changes to your body become emerging superpowers. This formula helped the series to become a hit, and we’ll know soon enough if Runaways the TV show will follow suit.
