Rumored Sony State of Play Could Reveal GoW Ragnarök Release Date

A new rumor suggests that Sony might be planning to host a new PlayStation State of Play livestream in March – one that could finally reveal the release date for the highly-anticipated God of War Ragnarok. So far, 2022 looks to be an exciting year for the PlayStation brand, with Horizon Forbidden West already launching to positive reviews earlier this month, and more blockbuster first-party exclusives like Grand Turismo 7 and the next God of War title set to arrive later on.

Many of these exciting first-party PlayStation titles have either been announced or presented in further detail during Sony’s State of Play livestreams, the latest of which was held late last month. This virtual event focused on the upcoming Grand Turismo 7, but other State of Plays have shown off multiple games both large and small. For example, October’s PlayStation State of Play event revealed the latest installment of Square Enix and Tri-Ace’s long-running Star Ocean series, Star Ocean The Divine Force, along with a new Bugsnax expansion and more.

A new PlayStation State of Play event could be coming in March, at least according to XboxEra co-founder Shpeshal_Nick. As reported by Game Rant, Tom Henderson asked if PlayStation had any plans for March, to which Nick replied that he’s heard that Sony has “a show” planned, even going on to describe it as “a big one.” While this doesn’t confirm that a new State of Play is in the cards, plenty of users took to the replies to speculate on what kind of game announcements could be made at such a show. Some speculations are centered around the upcoming PlayStation VR headset or a long-hoped-for Sly Cooper sequel, but many suspect that Santa Monica Studio will finally reveal the release date for God of War Ragnarok.

The highly-anticipated sequel to 2018’s hit God of War reboot was announced after years of speculation during September’s PlayStation Showcase livestream. The God of War Ragnarok trailer showed Kratos and Atreus as they begin a new journey across the Nine Realms of Nordic mythology to uncover the truth behind an ancient prophecy and battle legendary figures like the God of Thunder, Thor. Despite Sony’s relative silence about God of War Ragnarok and rumors that the game could be delayed until next year, insiders still claim that GoW Ragnarok will still make its 2022 release – whatever that may be.

Fans might find out what that date is sooner than they expected if this recent rumor of a March Sony State of Play event is true. Of course, nothing has been officially confirmed by Sony yet, and Shpeshal_Nick’s claims of a show could mean anything. All the same, with God of War Ragnarok still marked for a 2022 release, it might make sense for Sony to finally pull back the curtain on when exactly players can expect to pick up Kratos’s trusty Leviathan axe once more at a new PlayStation State of Play.
