Dune: Part Two has taken just 3 days to outgross a cavalcade of the previous year’s biggest blockbusters. The new movie is a sequel to the 2021 sci-fi hit Dune, which was adapted from the first half of the Frank Herbert novel of the same name. That movie became the twelfth highest-grossing movie of the year despite being released in a pandemic-depressed marketplace and being available on streaming via HBO Max the same day as its theatrical premiere.
Per Warner Bros. Pictures, the Dune: Part Two box office has grossed an epic global opening weekend of $178.5 million in 72 markets. This makes it the highest-grossing movie of 2024 overall in just three days, as the next highest-grossing movie worldwide is The Beekeeper, which made just over $150 million. Dune 2 has also already outgrossed the entire runs of many major blockbusters of 2023, including Scream VI ($169 million), Killers of the Flower Moon ($156.5 million), and the record-breaking Bollywood hit Jawan ($136.7 million).
How Many More 2023 Blockbusters Can Dune: Part Two Outgross?
The Dune: Part Two release has roughly doubled the 2021 opening of the original Dune, which went on to gross $433.8 million worldwide. If it keeps that proportion steady, the sequel could potentially climb as high as $850 million or more by the end of its run. Hitting that total would make it the highest-grossing movie ever for Timothée Chalamet, whose previous No. 1 movie was Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which grossed $647 million worldwide.
The extremely positive Dune: Part Two reviews that have earned it a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 94% may help the movie’s overall worldwide gross climb even higher as it builds word of mouth. This could potentially push it past the coveted $1 billion milestone. However, even if it doesn’t rise higher than the aforementioned $850 million threshold, it will have outgrossed all but three blockbusters from 2023. Below, check out the Top 5 movies of last year:
Title | Worldwide Box Office |
---|---|
Barbie | $1.44 billion |
The Super Mario Bros. Movie | $1.36 billion |
Oppenheimer | $960.7 million |
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 | $845.5 million |
Fast X | $714.6 million |
Even if Dune: Part Two somehow crashes and burns in the coming weeks and hits a similar $400 million gross to the original, it will have climbed past more than a dozen more 2023 hits. That includes titles as varied as Insidious: The Red Door ($186.3 million), The Flash ($266.5 million), The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes ($327.3 million), and Meg 2: The Trench ($394.3 million). However, this global opening shows that the future is looking bright for the sequel, which has every opportunity to become a record-breaking hit.
