Rosie O’Donnell Will Guest Star on Amazon’s A League of Their Own Reboot

Rosie O’Donnell will guest-star on the Amazon reboot of the classic 1992 baseball film A League of Their Own, but not as the character she originally portrayed. The original film told the story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, a female-driven sports team that began in 1943 and played for a dozen years until 1954. The comedy was directed by Penny Marshall and stared O’Donnell as Doris Murphy alongside a cast that included Tom Hanks as Jimmy Dugan, Madonna as Mae Mordabito, Geena Davis as Dottie Hinson, and Lori Petty as Kit Keller.

The actress, comedienne, and former talk show host announced the news during her appearance on the podcast Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino. O’Donnell was asked by Pellegrino if she would participate in the A League of Their Own reboot. See O’Donnell’s response below:

“Yes, I’m playing a bartender in one of the scenes at the local gay bar. I didn’t shoot it yet, I’m shooting it in the upcoming months.”

I had a great experience on A League of Their Own,” O’Donnell said of her participation in the original film, which recently celebrated the 29th anniversary of its release. The role of Doris marked O’Donnell’s big screen debut and a jump out of the world of standup comedy and into the glare of the media spotlight. “I love the Broad City women and when I was told [Abbi Jacobson] was doing League, she called me up and said, ‘Ro, would you do it?’ And I said, ‘In a minute.‘ ” Jacobson and Will Graham co-created Comedy Central’s Broad City.
