Hulu’s romantic comedy Rosaline has a diverse and talented cast made up of familiar faces. Directed by Karen Maine, Rosaline is based on When You Were Mine, Rebecca Serle’s young adult novel that took inspiration from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Though Serle’s novel is set in modern-day California, screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber set Rosaline‘s story in Renaissance-era Verona, Italy.
Rosaline focuses on Rosaline Capulet, a minor character in the original Shakespeare play. Kaitlyn Dever plays Rosaline, an ambitious lady and aspiring cartographer from the house of Capulet. Before the events of Rosaline, she is secretly seeing Romeo, though things change when Romeo becomes smitten with Juliet at the Capulets’ masquerade ball. Dever is best known for her role as Amy in Booksmart, though she has also previously starred in Last Man Standing, Unbelievable, and Dopesick. Isabela Merced as Juliet Capulet
Isabela Merced plays Juliet, Rosaline’s cousin and rival for Romeo’s affections. Merced is best known for playing Dora in Dora and the Lost City of Gold, a live-action film adaptation of Dora the Explorer.
