Roku OS 11.5: All The New Features Coming To Your Roku Device

Roku OS 11.5: All The New Features Coming To Your Roku Device

Roku has announced a new software update for its devices, and it comes six months after the release of Roku OS 11. Roku streaming devices run what is called Roku OS, the company’s own proprietary operating system and a competitor to the likes of Google TV and Apple’s tvOS. The operating system also comes pre-installed on some smart TVs.

Roku’s software announcement follows the company’s launch of new hardware products. Its cheapest streaming device, the Roku Express, has been refreshed and now boasts more storage and better connectivity. It has also announced a new and more affordable wireless subwoofer for those who want to step up their TV audio experience.

According to Roku, the new software is expected to begin rolling out to devices in the coming months and users will notice the changes right from the home screen menu thanks to the addition of a new “The Buzz” section. Described as a frequently updated section containing video clips, images, trailers, and interviews; these short-form videos will come from streaming services and entertainment services such as AMC+, Apple TV+, Starz, and The CW, among others, and will help users to discover new shows and movies. It will also be possible to interact with the content by liking posts or saving them to watch later, following profiles to view future posts, or streaming shows or movies mentioned in a post.

Another new section that will be available on the Home Screen Menu is Continue Watching. Like the name suggests, this tab is where users can easily continue shows and movies they were previously watching regardless of the streaming service. Rather than launching Netflix or HBO Max to resume that show, the Continue Watching section will collate uncompleted streams from supported channels making it easy for users to jump back into what they are watching.

Roku OS 11.5 also brings categories (Recents, Favorites, and subscribed) to the Live TV Channel Guide to make it easy for users to find their favorite content. Another Live TV Channel addition is a “Guide” button within the mobile app remote. When users tap this button they will be able to see what is playing live on their TV. The button can also be used to launch the Live TV Channel Guide. In addition, Roku OS 11.5 will bring the Roku Store to the home screen where users can search for and add new free and paid channels to their devices.

Roku is also improving the audio experience with the new update through the addition of Bluetooth Private Listening support on the Roku Ultra, Streambar, and Streambar Pro. Once live, users will be able to connect their Bluetooth headphones from the Sound Setting menu. Previously, this feature was only available via Roku’s premium remotes or the mobile app. Roku Voice will also now provide visual feedback when using voice search. According to Roku’s press release, a display will appear on the screen showing relevant channel options to what was searched for.
