Rogue’s X-Men Roster Assembles, As Her New Leader Status Perfectly Pays Off Her Origin

Rogue’s X-Men Roster Assembles, As Her New Leader Status Perfectly Pays Off Her Origin

The iconic X-Men hero Rogue, famous for her power-absorbing ability, Southern accent, and marriage to Gambit, is coming to lead mutantkind into their newest From the Ashes era, keeping the X-Men’s dream alive in the pages of The Uncanny X-Men. The Xavier Institute became a haven for the young Rogue at a time when her powers were dangerous and uncontrolled, and now the powerful hero will have the chance to repay this debut, as she opens her own mutant haven in New Orleans.

Rogue has acted as a mutant leader for years but has not led her own team in quite a while, and The Uncanny X-Men will give the former villain the chance to give back to the mutant community in a meaningful way.

The Uncanny X-Men, from acclaimed writer Gail Simone and the talented artist David Marquez, follows Rogue and her teammates – Wolverine, Gambit, Jubilee, and Nightcrawler – as they establish a new homebase for mutants in New Orleans, protecting a group of four new mutants from a dangerous world that hates and fears them.

After the brutal loss of Krakoa, mutants need the X-Men more than ever. With Professor X missing, Rogue reluctantly finds herself as the X-Man designated to keep the team together. Rogue, Wolverine, Gambit, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee forge a new home in a New Orleans, and when four mysterious young mutants show up at their doorstep, that home becomes a haven. Protecting mutants from a world that hates and fears them, and using their powers to ensure there’s a future worth living in. They are the Uncanny X-Men!

Rogue Debuted At Marvel As A Young Villain

Rogue first appeared in 1981’s Avengers Annual #10 as Mystique and Destiny’s adopted daughter and member of the terrorist group the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Rogue famously used her power-absorbing ability to permanently siphon Captain Marvel’s entire power set and psyche, causing Carol Danvers’ mind to live in the young Rogue for many years. As Rogue continued to absorb more and more people’s powers and memories, her mind became fractured, and she lost the ability to control her ability or the psyches she had absorbed. Reluctantly, Rogue seeks out Professor Xavier to ask for his help, and he offers to let her join the X-Men.

At first, unsurprisingly, the X-Men are unwilling to accept Rogue as a member of their team or family, because of her association with the Brotherhood. However, after saving Wolverine’s lover Mariko Yoshida, and helping to heal a severely injured Colossus, she is eventually welcomed into the X-Men. Slowly, Rogue is convinced that her mother’s anti-human tactics are not helping the mutant cause, and she becomes one of the most steadfast and passionate believers in Xavier’s dream and mission. Since then, Rogue has been a beacon of hope for the mutant community and has saved the world countless times, all because she was given haven by Xavier and allowed to prove her potential for heroism to the X-Men.

Xavier’s Broken Dream Has Inspired Rogue To Lead

Professor Xavier, Jean Grey, and Magneto walk through a Krakoan gate in House of X comics.

Xavier’s dream is over, and the former Professor has betrayed his X-Men by siding with Orchis – in a bid to “save” mutantkind – and attempting to erase the existence of Krakoa. Rogue has always been a follower of Xavier, so the final fall of Krakoa will greatly impact her but also inspire her to continue fighting for a safe future for all mutantkind. The Uncanny X-Men will see Rogue creating a haven for unsafe young mutants in New Orleans, a perfect way to honor her origins as a troubled teen villain, and the ways in which the X-Men helped her become the hero she is today.

Rogue has a lot to thank Professor Xavier and the X-Men for, like giving her hope, control over her abilities, and beautiful love in the form of her husband Gambit. While Rogue has led several teams of X-Men, her new era will see her giving back to the community she comes from, and becoming a mutant leader unlike any other.
