Following his nomination for Chaplin, Downey Jr. struggled with drug addiction, something that caused him to endure years of legal trouble in the process. However, he wound up recovering, going on to become the face of the MCU while earning a second Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor for 2009’s Tropic Thunder. His newest nod for Oppenheimer is the second time he’s been nominated in the same category.

The cast of Oppenheimer consists of other nominees as well, with Cillian Murphy up for Best Actor and Emily Blunt up for Best Supporting Actress. Downey Jr.’s role in the film stands out, as he is able to convincingly portray Strauss and his rivalry with the film’s titular character. His feud with the scientist is a key focus of the film, making his strong performance all the more compelling – and more likely to win an Oscar.
