Riz’s Decision & Vannak’s Death Set Up Master Chief’s Original Halo Story To Finally Be Told

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Halo season 2, episode 5 “Aleria”

Halo season 2 has finally set the stage for Master Chief John-117’s original Halo story to be told. Played by Pablo Schrieber in Paramount’s live-action Halo series, the show’s “Silver Timeline” is set apart from the Halo franchise’s core canon while also taking place before the events of the first Halo game. Although John-117 was joined by his fellow Spartan-IIs collectively designated Silver Team, recent events in Halo season 2 have revealed their fates while setting Master Chief up for his most classic solo mission.

Halo season 2, episode 5 reveals the aftermath of the Fall of Reach as it’s depicted in this alternate timeline. Having barely escaped the world before the planet was glassed by the Covenant, John-117 and his few remaining allies find refuge on the colony world of Aleria. However, the episode also confirms the fates of Vannak-134 (Bentley Kalu), Riz-028 (Natasha Culzac), and Kai-125 (Kate Kennedy), effectively priming Master Chief for his original (and most iconic) Halo story.

Silver Team Is Officially No More After Halo Season 2, Episode 5

Vannak, Riz, and Kai’s Fates Revealed

The manipulations of the Office of Naval Intelligence and the UNSC’s Fleet Command caused problems for Silver Team from the very beginning of Halo season 2. Firstly, John-117 was made to look as though he was mentally unstable by ONI’s Col. James Ackerson. This was a means of discrediting the Chief’s evidence that the Covenant was already on Reach, a threat kept hidden due to the futility of resistance and a desire to mitigate chaos and panic.

With Silver Team pulled from active duty as a result, Kai-125 chose to leave with Ackerson in secret before Reach’s demise, having agreed to train his new Spartan-IIIs revealed at the end of Halo season 2, episode 5. Even without their armor which was taken by ONI during its evacuation, the remaining three members of Silver Team fought during the Covenant’s invasion as seen in Halo season 2, episode 4. However, Vannak was killed by the Covenant’s Arbiter Var ‘Gatanai. As such, Vannak is given a funeral and his body cremated in Halo season 2, episode 5.

On top of the injuries already sustained from previous missions, Riz-028’s new injuries received during the Fall of Reach helped her finally decide to retire from Spartan life for good. Despite John-117 and Doctor Catherine Halsey wanting her to continue to fight, Riz refuses to go with them, choosing instead to remain with the colonists on Aleria. As a result, it certainly seems as though John-117 is now the last member of Silver Team left standing.

Master Chief Is Now Ready For His Solo Halo Adventure

Finding The First Halo Ring

The loss of Silver Team is likely challenging for Master Chief on a personal level. However, it does set John-117 up for the live-action Paramount show to finally adapt Halo: Combat Evolved, the very first game in the franchise where John-117 was one of the last known Spartan-IIs following the Fall of Reach. While supported by the UNSC’s Marines, Master Chief is the sole Spartan hero seeking to protect the first Halo ring from the Covenant.

There’s likely still a reckoning to be had with Kai-125 and the Spartan-IIIs in the final episodes of Halo season 2. However, the odds of Kai and John joining forces once more do seem low considering Master Chief’s desire for revenge against ONI and FLEETCOM, particularly when it comes to Ackerson. Ultimately, John-117 should be the sole Spartan-II going forward, especially if Halo season 3 does indeed happen with the Battle of Installation 04 (the first Halo ring).

When Will Master Chief and Cortana Reunite?

Cortana (Jen Taylor) speaks with Ackerson (Joseph Morgan) in Halo season 2

Despite the effective dissolution of Silver Team, John-117 won’t be without allies. However, he’s yet to reunite with Cortana, his most important ally who was abducted by the Covenant during the Fall of Reach. With any luck, John-117 will be able to rescue Cortana as Halo season 2 reaches its end, especially considering how crucial she is during the Battle of Installation 04 which will hopefully be the focus for a potential Halo season 3.

A live-action adaptation of the video game franchise of the same name, Halo follows Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 (Pablo Schrieber) as he fights his part in a war between humanity’s United Nations Space Command (UNSC) and the Covenant, an alliance of multiple hostile races of aliens intent on destroying the human race. The Master Chief is supported by Cortana (Jen Taylor) – an AI construct based on the personality of Dr. Catherine Halsey, who created the Spartan supersoldier program – implanted in his brain.
