The American broadcast television network The CW has had quite a few hits in the field of adapting DC Comics properties for the small screen of late, with its Arrow-verse shows: The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. In an effort to build upon such past successes, Arrow-verse co-creator/showrunner Greg Berlanti is now overseeing the production of a subversive adaptation of the Archie Comics franchise (created by publisher/editor John L. Goldwater way back in 1941) in the form of the forthcoming TV show, Riverdale.
Featuring a fully-rounded cast of lead actors as characters like Archie Andrews (K.J. Apa), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Riverdale is primed to offer viewers already familiar with the Archie comic book series a whole new way of looking at the quaintly imagined, eponymous town. With the standing intention being to bring the classic Archie Comics of decades past further into the twenty-first century, the latest poster for the new show (to be featured at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con) this week promises all of that and more.
In the official SDCC poster featured below, Archie Andrews is featured front and center hovering over the rest of the denizens who make up the eponymous town of Riverdale; though the expressions captured on the characters faces don’t appear as sunny and carefree as some comic book readers might remember. For super fans of the property, the pilot episode is set to premiere tonight at 6pm as a part of Comic-Con preview night.

Everything appears to be coming together in the making of Riverdale in a big way; and if things turn out as well as network producer Berlanti no doubt hopes they will, fans may never look at Archie Comics in the same way ever again. Taking the approach of surreality over the wholesome tone originally established by Goldwater in the 1940s should result in an adaptation of the source material unlike any that has come before.
Come time of the show’s premiere later this fall, fans of the characters adapted for television by Berlanti and company can decide for themselves whether or not Riverdale is another winning comic book adaptation produced by The CW. Either way, Archie Andrews is all set for a major shift of character when he greets audiences (both new and old) once again on the the new show.
