Ridley Scott Reveals He’s Turned Down Multiple Superhero Movies Because His Stories Are “Better”

Ridley Scott has received several offers to direct a superhero movie, but he said he turned them down because he wasn’t interested. Scott, a renowned director, has created many iconic films in several genres, including Blade Runner, Alien, Gladiator, and The Martian. Despite the rise of franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe – soon to be relaunched as the DC Universe – the director hasn’t helmed a superhero movie yet, but there may be a reason for that based on his recent comments.

In an interview with Deadline, Scott shared his thoughts on superhero movies, saying he isn’t a “superhero fan,” despite enjoying a few Batman films and Richard Donner’s Superman. He was asked if he had ever been offered a superhero movie, and he revealed he’d turned down those offers. The Napoleon director claims he has already directed “two or three” superhero films and that his stories are “better.”

Yeah, been offered, but just said, no, thank you. Not for me. I’ve done two or three superhero films. I think Sigourney Weaver’s a superhero in Aliens. I think Russell Crowe‘s a superhero in Gladiator. And Harrison Ford is the super anti-hero in Blade Runner. The difference is, the f-cking stories are better.

Will Ridley Scott Direct A Superhero Movie In The Future?

Scott would add a unique vision to any superhero movie that would be lucky enough to have him direct it. He always has an intriguing script to work with, and he tells the story in a way that would be a breath of fresh air for either Marvel or DC. However, Scott is one of many older directors who has openly shared their disinterest in the superhero genre and how it’s damaging cinema. In 2021, around the release of House of Gucci, Scott called superhero movies “f-cking boring as sh-t” and told Deadline that they were “mostly saved by special effects.” He said:

I got off the rail, but I mean, c’mon. They’re mostly saved by special effects, and that’s becoming boring for everyone who works with special effects, if you’ve got the money.

The odds of Scott directing a superhero movie are incredibly low based on these comments. It’s a shame because the 85-year-old director would add something interesting to the genre, but it’s also not a world he’s interested in. Superhero movies aren’t for everyone, and it’s alright for Ridley Scott to stick to the films that he loves.
