Rick & Morty Season 6 Missed A Perfect Robot Rick Story Opportunity

Rick & Morty Season 6 Missed A Perfect Robot Rick Story Opportunity

Rick and Morty season 6, episode 10, “A Rick in King Mortur’s Mort” revealed that Rick had actually replaced himself with a robot in season 6, episode 9, but it missed an even better story opportunity. Robot Rick was only around for the last two episodes of season 6. But the idea of Rick creating a robot clone to replace himself for a while could go a long way in fixing one of the show’s most common criticisms.

In Rick and Morty season 6, episode 9, Rick begins acting a lot nicer to Morty, making Morty suspicious that it isn’t the real Rick. In the very next episode, Morty is proven correct when he discovers that Rick replaced himself with a robot earlier in episode 9, only for Robot Rick to be destroyed by the end of the episode. As it turns out, the real Rick replaced himself with a robot so that he could focus on hunting down Rick Prime, the overarching villain of Rick and Morty. However, this obsession was only present in the last two episodes, continuing one of Rick and Morty‘s biggest problems.

Why Rick Should Have Been Robot Rick For All Of Season 6

Rick & Morty Season 6 Missed A Perfect Robot Rick Story Opportunity

One of the most common criticisms of Rick and Morty is its canon episodes, and how it randomly switches from story-heavy overarching narratives to goofy one-off episodes. Although season 6 started out with an intense Rick Prime story, he was barely mentioned again until the season finale, when Rick’s supposed obsession was revealed. However, this reveal doesn’t really work, as Rick is shown going on unrelated adventures from episodes 2-8. It would have been much better to reveal that Robot Rick replaced the real Rick in season 6, episode 2 instead.

Robot Rick being around all season would have made Rick’s obsession with finding Rick Prime much more impactful, as he would have been working tirelessly in the background of each episode. This storyline would also address the show’s story criticisms, as it would retroactively make each Rick and Morty season 6 episode about one-off adventures while also featuring elements of the overarching narrative in the background. As it stands, though, the Robot Rick storyline in season 6’s finale seems like a real missed opportunity.

Will Season 7 Finally Tell The Long-Awaited Rick Prime Story?

Rick and Morty season 6 finale ending

After the Robot Rick reveal in the season 6 finale, the episode ends with Rick saying that the duo is finally going to hunt down Rick Prime in Rick and Morty season 7. The Rick Prime storyline has been teased all throughout the last few seasons, and now that Rick seems to know where Rick Prime is located, the confrontation could finally be happening in season 7. However, due to the show’s track record, it might not.

Rick and Morty season 5 ended on a huge Evil Morty cliffhanger, suggesting that season 6 would be the story-heavy season fans have been waiting for. While they did keep this promise in episode 1, the rest of season 6 pretty much ignored season 5’s set-ups, causing many viewers to be let down. Even though the season 6 finale seems to promise a major story presence in season 7, it’s possible that the next season could simply ignore the overarching story again. In the finale, Rick even says that they could change their minds about Rick Prime, leaving the story of Rick and Morty season 7 up in the air.
