Rick & Morty Might Be Splitting Up In Season 5 Finale Trailer

A new trailer for the Rick and Morty season 5 finale has teased a possible split between the two titular characters. Season 5 has been generally well-received by critics and fans of the Adult Swim series, though it has received some more negative responses for sinking to crasser, lower-brow comedy at times. Rick and Morty will take a few weeks off, but fans can look forward to the two-part season 5 finale premiering on September 5.

So far, Rick and Morty season 5 hasn’t done much to affect the show’s status quo. Most of the episodes have been one-off stories, often with pretty silly storylines. It’s been a season heavy on genre spoofs – including anime, gangster movies, and classic sci-fi – and one that’s been largely devoid of the heavier, thought-provoking moments that have helped the series stand out from other animated comedies. But with Season 5, Episode 8 finally diving back into Rick’s past in new and exciting ways, Rick and Morty season 5 could be headed for a strong finish.

In the new Rick and Morty season 5 trailer, shared to YouTube by Swimpedia, Morty is seen stealing Rick’s portal gun for some unauthorized adventures of his own, leading to a stern confrontation with his grandfather. Morty dares Rick to kick him out of their duo and fly solo, prompting Rick to summon a game show-style wheel of things he deems to be better than Morty. It’s not the first time the two characters have butted heads, but with the season 5 finale being an hour-long, there could be some new twists and turns in store. Given the overall lukewarm response Rick and Morty season 5 has received, the finale could be a chance to redeem the episodes that haven’t quite landed with fans. Odd plotlines like the giant space incest baby, and an over-reliance on strict parody over original story ideas, have been the main targets of criticism. Season 5 has generally maintained the show’s high standards for its writing, performances, and animation. Still, when a series has set as high of a bar for itself as Rick and Morty has, it inevitably won’t meet it every single time.

Creating some real tension in Rick and Morty’s relationship could be an excellent way to finish season 5 on a stronger emotional note. Season 5 has revealed some new details about Rick’s past and his relationship with his family in “Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort,” which could set up some interesting developments. The Rick and Morty season 5 finale premieres on Adult Swim on September 5.
