Rick and Morty Confirms There’s 1 Planet Immune to Rick’s Portal Gun

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Rick and Morty: Finals Week #1 – SheRick Holmes and Mortson! Portal travel is arguably the cornerstone of Rick and Morty canon. The two Sci-Fi adventurers regularly teleport to wherever they want to go, anywhere in the multiverse with Rick’s portal gun. Plus, it was the invention of portal travel that defined Rick as the smartest man in the multiverse, while also putting a pretty big target on his back (even in regard to alternate versions of himself). However, as important as this tech is in the series, there’s one planet that’s actually immune to Rick’s portal gun.

In Oni Press’ Rick and Morty: Finals Week #1 – SheRick Holmes and Mortson by Daniel Kibblesmith and Priscilla Tramontano, Rick and Morty are cosplaying as Sherlock Holmes and Watson, as Rick is obsessed with making Rick and Morty as iconic and legendary as Sherlock Holmes. So, dressed for their respective parts, Rick and Morty find a mystery that’s seemingly impossible to solve, just to prove they’re smart enough (or, rather, Rick is smart enough) to solve it.

Rick and Morty find such a mystery on a ‘planet’ (though it’s more like a celestial containment structure) called ACD-1887, which is described as a ‘safehouse planet’ that was constructed to keep functionally immortal beings safe. These beings will never die, unless they are killed, so they exist here to ensure they don’t get murdered. And one of the safeguards is a security system that makes the planet effectively teleportation-proof.

ACD-1887 is the 1 Place in the Whole Multiverse Rick and Morty Can’t Portal To

Rick and Morty’s teleportation-proof planet finally justifies the use of Rick’s ship!

While Rick and Morty obviously get there in this issue, they have to fly Rick’s ship there rather than use his portal gun. There are only a few handfuls of places Rick and Morty physically fly themselves to rather than simply teleporting there, and it’s never explicitly made clear why they choose to use the spaceship at all when portal travel is instantaneous. Here, there’s at least a reason why the ship is used, as there’s literally no other way to get to this planet.

Rick May Have Been to ACD-1887 Before, When He Waged War Against Himself

Rick and Morty's Rick killing an army of his variants.

It’s interesting that Rick and Morty have never gone to ACD-1887 before, especially given that Rick seemingly knew all about it off-hand. Then again, maybe the very reason Rick knew about it was that he had been there before. Rick very famously waged war on his own variants after the death of his wife and daughter at the hands of Rick Prime. Could he have taken refuge in ACD-1887 while systematically killing his infinite selves?

While fans may never know the truth of how Rick knew about this planet, or if he used it as a tactically advantageous location while slaughtering his alternate selves, it would be a sound line of logic for the smartest man in the universe. Indeed, ACD-1887 is the one place where teleportation doesn’t work in Rick and Morty canon, making it perhaps the most unique location in the entire established universe.
