After earning immense success with the first film and a Netflix deal to continue the whodunit series, the latest installment, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, premiered theatrically in November and will hit the streaming service on December 23. As one of the best films of 2022, the sequel has achieved the rare feat of living up to the original’s expectations, and there are now hopes for a third film to continue Detective Benoit Blanc’s endeavors.
In a recent appearance on WTF with Marc Maron, Johnson jokingly teased a pitch for Knives Out 3, which may have some inspiration from his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He commented about wanting to create something new with each movie to heighten the viewing experience and noted that he needs the challenge. When asked about the next installment, the writer/director joked about taking the series to space as a potential moon mystery. Here is Johnson’s quote below:
“Well, no, I gonna take the franchise to space, it’s time… No, it’s time, why not. It’s time to take it to space! It’s a moon mystery!”
Everything We Know About Knives Out 3
Johnson had previously revealed that Knives Out 3 would be his next film, but not much is known about it. Because Daniel Craig’s role as Blanc is integral to the series (involved with uncovering the mystery behind the murders from both entries), the famous detective will likely return. With the exception of Craig, Knives Out 3 will bring a new cast, as previously practiced in Glass Onion. The sequel briefly introduced Blanc’s partner, played by Hugh Grant, to show a glimpse of his personal life, but it is unclear if he will have a future appearance.
Knives Out 3 will be distributed by Netflix, but the details of a theatrical release have not been confirmed. Glass Onions ran in theaters for one week and performed well at the box office, generating the most theatrical success for the streaming service by grossing around $13 million in its first five days. While anything is possible, Johnson did confirm a Knives Out prequel focusing on Blanc will not be happening. Nevertheless, Glass Onion did reveal more about the detective’s life, so the third installment may show more of his origin story.
As the success of the Knives Out series continues, there are questions about what Johnson plans for the third movie’s premise. While another murder mystery is a given, Johnson’s joke pitch about space and theories about the next location bring intrigue about Knives Out 3‘s developments. The writer/director has already said that more Knives Out films with Craig are possible, and there are plenty of settings and capable stars to incorporate down the line. Still, anticipation has already arisen for Knives Out 3, and it will only be a matter of time before more specifics unfold about Benoit’s next big case.
