RHOSLC: How Filming Show Helped Heather Gay Get Over Divorce

Heather Gay from the new Bravo reality series, The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, felt a sense of independence while filming the show. It seems like this newfound freedom also helped her move on from her divorce, which she considers a big failure in her life.

So far, RHOSLC has only aired four episodes, but fans are already in love with Heather as a housewife. Not only does she have a great storyline, but she is fun, down-to-earth, and very relatable. Heather has become a fan favorite since the show started, and it seems the fans are loving her more even more as the season progresses.

Heather recently sat down to have a chat with the hosts of The Daily Dish podcast, where they spoke about her divorce and how her Mormon friends feel about her joining RHOSLC. The episode started off on the topic of her divorce, reports BravoTV. Heather explained how the wounds were still fresh when she began filming. “I mean, we separated nine years ago, but we’ve been officially divorced for five. And it’s still fresh to me…I can barely say ex-husband, I always say the girls’ father, or my husband,” the mother of three revealed. “I never lead with me being divorced. I don’t know why. It’s like a giant scarlet letter, like this giant stamp of failure. I’ve never been able to really break away from it.” In the Mormon community, Heather was made to feel less-than because she couldn’t make her marriage work, which explains her deep feelings of failure. While she may have struggled to cope with getting a divorce, she was able to overcome those feelings as she began filming. “Throughout filming, I was able to see myself as independent and as an individual…It’s been healing to kind of come into my own a little bit,” she claimed. “Now I can say ex-husband, I can say I’m divorced without, you know, trembling and crying.”

So, how does her ex feel about her being on the show? Heather says he was kind of supportive, but worried about how the show will affect Heather as a mother, as well as their daughters. “You know, he’s a devout Mormon and it’s a huge departure from his core values…But you know, he’s letting me do it. He supports us financially and emotionally, but I raise the kids and they’re with me 100 percent of the time. So, it’s more like he’s just laughing, silently judging from afar,” she said with a giggle. Even though her ex-husband judges her for her life choices, Heather now feels she is at peace in her current life. She even recalled the time she realized she did not agree with some aspects of Mormonism. “The aha moment was really my daughters…I thought, OK, I already got divorced. Now I have to double down and even be a better mom, a stricter mom, more Mormon of a mom,” she recalled. “It was really when I kind of looked at them and recognized that I was setting them up to have the same sort of conflict that I was experiencing myself. Because I was endorsing something I didn’t truly believe in.

Now that Heather has a new purpose in life with RHOSLC, she feels she is ready to leave her old, Mormon-focused life and put that energy into herself and her daughters.
