The Real Housewives of Atlanta alum NeNe Leakes is reflecting on her late husband Gregg’s last words to her. Viewers saw the depths of NeNe and Gregg’s relationship while she appeared on the Bravo series on and off for 12 seasons. During the first few seasons of the show, the couple hit a few bumps in the road. NeNe felt Gregg wasn’t treating her properly and decided to end the relationship.
After less than two years of divorce, NeNe and Gregg decided to remarry. They both knew life wasn’t the same without each other and that they made a huge mistake breaking up in the first place. Five years after they remarried, Gregg was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. He did six months of chemotherapy and went into remission. In June 2021, NeNe confirmed that Gregg’s cancer had returned, and his health took a turn for the worst.
During an exclusive sit-down interview with People, the reality star opened up about her relationship with her late husband and revealed some of his last words. “The last five days before his passing was really beautiful,” Nene revealed. “All of his children were there. His best friends were there. Our closest friends were there. We all sat with him around the clock.” NeNe knew at that point that her husband wasn’t going to be around for much longer, so the pair talked as much as they could. Even though NeNe is still trying to process his passing, she found comfort in some of the words Gregg said to her before he died. “I’m not going to leave you. God is going to bless you,” Gregg said to NeNe toward the end.
He also said he wanted NeNe to “move on” with her life once he transitioned to the other side. However, that is easier said than done. Since Gregg was diagnosed with cancer, NeNe had taken on the role of caretaker, something she never knew she would have to do. The Atlanta native admitted it was “difficult” to take on this position when Gregg, who received support from the RHOA cast, was the one who handled everything. Thankfully, Gregg did leave a folder he put together in case something ever happened to him for his family. NeNe said the folder included a letter to their son Brentt, explaining important everyday duties. NeNe was so touched, and she found comfort knowing Gregg was truly the love of her life. As Gregg took his final breath, NeNe held his hand and kissed for the last time.
Gregg and NeNe were one of the most beloved couples in The Real Housewives of Atlanta franchise. Even though they had a few rough patches in their relationship, NeNe and Gregg loved each other deeply. While it will be difficult for NeNe, who is coping with the loss, to move on, knowing Gregg only wants the best for her will certainly help her move forward in her new life.
