Rey’s Next Star Wars Movie Needs To Confront One Chilling Rise Of Skywalker Mystery

Star Wars: New Jedi Order will need to address one disturbing plot point from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that still hangs in the balance. Rey’s new movie, rumored to be titled New Jedi Order, will focus on Rey Skywalker attempting to re-establish the Jedi Order in the wake of the most recent galactic threat, the First Order, crumbling. The movie, set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker in the Star Wars timeline, will also have plenty to answer, given how many questions the sequel trilogy’s final installment created.

Along with the shocking reveal that Emperor Palpatine had not only survived what the entire galaxy had assumed was his death but also was still up to his old tricks, The Rise of Skywalker’s ending left the future of Star Wars’ major players unclear. Now, Rey’s new movie must address what will come of the Jedi, the Sith, and the galaxy’s political system and what changes have taken place since The Rise of Skywalker. One group’s future in particular remains a mystery, and, given the disturbing nature of their past, confronting this story may prove difficult.

Most Of The First Order’s Stormtroopers Were Kidnapped As Children

John Boyega as Finn, wielding a blue lightsaber in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced many new characters, but one of the most compelling was Finn, who immediately showed himself to be a stormtrooper conflicted about his role in the First Order and what he was being commanded to do. As a new trilogy, it wasn’t yet clear how these stormtroopers came to be; the prequel trilogy saw clone troopers created and engineered to follow orders, but the Empire had willing participants as stormtroopers. Ultimately, it was revealed that the sequels’ stormtroopers would take a much darker turn. Many stormtroopers, Finn included, were kidnapped as children.

While Finn didn’t become the Jedi he was expected to be in the Star Wars sequel movies, his story was nevertheless an incredible one. Almost immediately in the sequel trilogy’s first film, Finn abandons his post, at great risk to himself, because he is unwilling to kill for the First Order. At first, he seems to be the only one dissenting in this way; however, The Rise of Skywalker had a fascinating update to this aspect of Finn’s story—though it left more questions than answers.

Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie Needs To Explain What Happens To Them

Lando and Jannah stand side-by-side in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

In The Rise of Skywalker, the heroes encounter Jannah, who reveals herself to also be an ex-stormtrooper. She explains that she was also taken as a child but refused to do what the First Order was attempting to force her to do. Even more shocking, she is part of a group composed entirely of ex-stormtroopers who were taken as children.

At the end of the movie, Star Wars legend Lando Calrissian promises to help her find out more about where she comes from, which sets up an exciting future plot for Jannah, but the larger question remains: what will happen to the remaining stormtroopers? Because they were taken as children, they shouldn’t be seen as enemies in allegiance to the First Order, but rather as victims of its oppression. Given that, New Jedi Order must grapple with how best to integrate ex-stormtroopers into whatever shape the galaxy takes next.
