Rey Repeated An Obi-Wan Kenobi Lightsaber Mistake Almost 25 Years Later

Rey Repeated An Obi-Wan Kenobi Lightsaber Mistake Almost 25 Years Later

Obi-Wan Kenobi never ended up meeting Rey in Star Wars, yet both of them ended up committing the exact same lightsaber mistake without realizing it. Obi-Wan was one of the best lightsaber fighters in the prequels; the entire Jedi Council recognized Obi-Wan’s calm and collected prowess in battle. In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith the Council unanimously voted for him to take on General Grievous. Meanwhile, Rey managed to revive the dying art of lightsaber fighting in the sequel trilogy, though she was not nearly as battle-seasoned as Kenobi.

One of the most well-known lightsaber lines was in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones by Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, where he told Anakin Skywalker, “this weapon is your life.” For the most part, Kenobi followed his own advice by treating his lightsaber with the utmost respect. But there was one rare instance where Kenobi actively ignored his own advice. On the other hand, Rey initially rejected Anakin and Luke’s old lightsaber upon realizing its dark and troubled history. She eventually came to respect its significance, though she accidentally dishonored the lightsaber’s original creator.

Rey Buried Anakin’s Lightsaber On Tatooine

At the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Rey buries Anakin’s old saber in his least favorite thing in the entire galaxy: sand. For Luke Skywalker, seeing his father’s lightsaber laid to rest at his old family estate likely represented a poetic end to his heroic history as a Jedi. Yet even Luke likely didn’t realize just how much his father hated sand. For Anakin, Tatooine was filled with awful memories of his time as a slave and his mother’s death.

Rey’s blunder with Anakin’s saber is understandable, since she never really knew Anakin or his dislike of sand. She may not have even known that the saber belonged to Anakin long before Luke owned it. But the fact remains that his Force ghost was likely peeved seeing his old saber being buried in the same sand he grew up cursing.

Obi-Wan Did The Same Thing Over 25 Years Prior

Obi-Wan Kenobi digs up his and Anakin's lightsabers

Surprisingly, Obi-Wan did the exact same thing as Rey almost 25 years prior. In Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 1, he reveals he buried both his own lightsaber and Anakin’s in the sands of Tatooine to avoid detection from the Empire and their Inquisitors. Unlike Rey, Obi-Wan knew exactly just how much Anakin hated sand, which almost makes it seem like he buried Anakin’s lightsaber out of spite of what his old apprentice had become.

At first, it may seem like Obi-Wan buried Anakin’s lightsaber in the sand, knowing it’s the last place Anakin would look for it. In reality, Obi-Wan Kenobi shows how Obi-Wan had no idea Anakin survived and became Darth Vader. In Obi-Wan’s mind, burying Anakin’s old lightsaber was akin to laying Anakin to rest, which makes it all the more puzzling why he’d choose the one place Anakin hated the most. In any case, it’s a little humorous that both Obi-Wan and Rey managed to disrespect Anakin in the same way 25 years apart in Star Wars.
